Fake SS ?!?!?

Well I just got of the phone with Nick (the owner of the wrecked SS) and It turns out the official Insurance ruling on the Camaro is that it is indeed NOT an SS and in fact is a Z28. We thought the Vin was coming up that way because the cars are so simuliar but turns out that it came out of the factory that way (as a Z28 ) or the Vin numbers were swapped? Either way the value of the car is lower then it would be if it was an SS Vin. This is strait from the insurance company. Hopefully they are mistaken but I don't see how they would be, an ideas?

There will be a plate inside the car with the car's series number.

if the factory deemed it an SS then it was sent to SLP and given the proper VIN before-hand...it sounds like the 1st owner gave it to slp and they "cloned" it an SS, hence the reason for no SS VIN. there is a difference.

that being if the seller refused to refund me the difference in value if its significant...of course thats a moot point now that the car is dead.

well the insurance is refunding him the amount of a Z28 to pay of his lown, but its not enough. If they gave him the amount for the SS he would have enough. Which is basically the only reason he is pissed

well that he didnt tell me but he went with KBB's price and the Z28 was worth about 1500 less then the SS (I think don't qoute me)

If that's the case, you have to call BS on the insurance company. If you gave them the proper VIN, they should have insured the car properly. If you paid SS money, and the insurance company won't cover it, then the seller is liable for fraud. I pity him if he didn't know and paid SS money too and gets stuck with the bill.

Yeah if its up to the insurance to pay we will make sure they pay up no matter what. But if it falls under fraud then he will have to go that route

There are 2 ways to tell whether it is a "real" SS. Look at the RPO codes on the sticker in the driver's door, if you see code WU8 it is a real SS. To verify, or if the sticker is missing or illegible, call SLP directly and give them the VIN. They can look it up and tell you over the phone.

There is no guarantee that there will be a plate inside the car or anything else. Those are all SLP options.

When I insured my 99 SS, it came on my insurance (Progressive) as a Z28.

I called SLP with the VIN and they gave me my build number and all of the options that they did to it.

CALL SLP!!! They are cool about people looking up stuff like this.

You can also take the vin# to any Chevy dealership and they can print you out the RPO code associated with that vin.

i thought it was kinda odd to see it was a base model car(no power options). z28/SS is a category including both, just because it is in this category doesnt make it an SS.

What Jlaw said is exactly right. He had to go through the same thing with his SS. And as for as the insurance guy goes, he was paying insurance on a Z28 so they are going to give him a check for the value of a Z28. If he was paying insurance on a SS(which there is no such thing in the eyes of an insurance guy) and they were giving him a chack for the value of a Z28, thats one thing but there is no issue here.

They try to rip my friend Damon on his "SS" the same way. The SS is an appearance package, and the vin will always come up as a Z28. But like Bo said is he paid for Z28 insurance they may not want to pay. I would show them proof that is was an SS.

as stated above its called fraud if the car is knowingly sold at the face value of another car, i believe it would hold up in small claims court. i wouldnt be all defensive if you have nothing to worry about. :shrug:

the vin didnt come up "SS" when they asked a porfessional... trust the seller? it looks like the seller just sold them an SS and it wasnt even an SS, so trusting the seller was out. no one has "blamed" anyone yet. there is a way that car may have not been an SS.

Im 300 miles away and last I heard, its junked. If someone wants to give me the VIN since I obviously cant get it, Ill be more than happy to call SLP and get to the bottom of this but until then, arguing over it is pointless. lol it might be time to let it go. The insurance company cut him a check for the car he was paying for since no matter what it was thats all they would pay for. I don't know the finally ruling as of yet but I'll see what it came down to. But again all they are going to pay for is what he was paying for. I would be interested to know what it really was but I don't have the VIN so I can't call. I think it was mainly the insurance company just trying to get out of it but there is only one def way to find out.
