my crank pulley is visibly and audibly vibrating really bad?? anyone have an idea why? will just tightening it solve my problem? why would it become loose?

thanks in advance.

Is it a stock pully or an aftermarket underdrive pully? Did you install this pully or factory?

p.s. forum gods-->oh yeah i just realized this is the wrong forum. so put this in tech if you want, thanks

Put the car in 5th gear and tighten it to spec. Who knows what the previous owner did. It probably just vibrated loose but I think its your cars way of telling you to put an nunderdrive pulley on it!

Boner, you know people don't really need crank pulley bolts.

Just because I dont need one doesnt mean everyone else doesnt need one either. My car is special, and by special, I mean retarded.

ok, so a better question on that note: will sn95 5.0 underdrives work on my >93 5.0??

MAZDA crank pulleys come apart all the time. you might need to replace it.

I have seen them work loose before, its no big deal. Just tighten them pretty good, but they are easy to strip, so not too tight.

Not sure about the pulley interchange. Measure the depth from the face of the harmonic balancer to the face of the pulley. If the sn95 is the same measurement and the same bolt pattern, then put that shit on.

I don't think so. I just looked at a couple of sites and they always list them as 79-93 and then 94-95.

I could order you a pulley set for around a $100. Might help out some for the upcoming track day.......

is it a one piece or two piece pulley? if it's two piece then the rubber injected to hold the two together might have just rotted away.

Might help out some for the upcoming track day.......eh, i don't have expendible money. nate has the set off Amy's car and i was going to use those if they worked. but since they don't i'm gonna try and make the factory one my bitch. also with the "system" i need the alternator to continue putting out max power

but thanks anyway.

also STEVEN if you read this answer your damn phone and then tell me the torque spec for the crank bolt!!!!

and chris/nate/amy answer your phones please. i need to borrow the torque wrench

crank pulley's tight. but still vibrating. must be the harmonic balancer????

Yup, balancer is more then likely coming apart. Very very common with the 5.0.

crank pulley's tight. but still vibrating. must be the harmonic balancer????

the harmonic dampener part that is secured by a rubber like shim to the actual pully has started to break down and it is causing the heavy (harmonic dampener part) to wobble as it is spinning. i have seen 5.0 break their crank in up to 4 places when the crank is doing this. you need to buy a new pully asap!!!!!! and the audible noise you are hearing is the wobbeling of the crank pully scrapeing against the timing cover. and as for your other question, to torque a crank bolt 110 is more than enough. !!!!!! trust me on this since all i do is work on mustangs 9hrs a day and this is a very common problem, tony (GT) will back me up on this also.

Little cheaper then 5.0 Resto, and yes I might have one at the house. But with the failure rate of them, its best to get a new one.

Or there you can have a SFI balancer, that has no rubber ring.

Get underdrives and ditch the system, its just extra weight.

Or there you can have a SFI balancer, that has no rubber ring.what is special about these types? just the lack of rubber ring? do you have to "set" it or just bolt on and go?

is there a down side to them?

Gt
10-19-2005, 10:03 PM
No rubber ring, means no more spun balancer. SFI is needed for a certain ET is reached. Just bolt it on and go.

No down side that I know of, cept the Ebay is a "cheap" sfi one. I run a Romac on the 88. Romac's are generally ~$150 I think (been a while since I bought it)

well i think i'm gonna get one of those SFI ones. prolly the one on ebay there. thanks for all the help guys.

i had the same thing happen to my eclipse...it started out as just a squeek, then it ate up 2 belts and my lower timing belt cover...not to mention the belt jumped off the pulley completely one time. spend the money and get a new one without the rubber in it so you wont run into this again, its one big PITA

haha...sssshhhh, its a secret only the pro's know. and the package said it takes 8 hours to dry, fuck that! less than 2 hours and a hairdryer and i was rocking a busted crank pulley back down the interstate.

oh, and dont lay your face directly under the 5 pound pulley when you knock it loose...its no bueno

but thanks to one of my fucking installers the ignition is broke and i can't start the fucking car!!!!

and since you can't replace the ignition until the key is in the run postion i also can't just install a new ignition...............mother fucker!!!

the genius ripped the key out without pushing the key-release-button in.....

drill it out and put in a new ignition switch. Easy fix. remove the pos key remove bar while at it.what should i drill? my uncle told me there is a pin on the bottom side under the cylinder that you push in and the cylinder will slide out. do i drill that out? or the whole cylinder itself(which seems crazy)?

Gt
10-28-2005, 03:53 PM
You can't push that pin in, until you can turn it to run. You could try to drill it, but it will probably just spin with the drill bit. Drill out the tumblers on the igntion switch so you can turn with without the key. It's a bit of a pain, but can be done. I've done it a couple times.

slowLX
10-28-2005, 03:56 PM

after i drill it out and turn the key over, i can push the pin in and the cylinder will just come out?

yup, once you can get the switch to turn to run, just push the pin in and pull out the switch.

yup, once you can get the switch to turn to run, just push the pin in and pull out the switch.what's the goal in drilling it out. what am i trying to get rid of? i got a pretty big hole going now, but still no luck. so what needs to be gone for this to turn over? i just drilled down the center of the key hole, now what?

you should be able to switch it on but also wiggle the steering wheel while you are trying to switch it on

and now i've drilled the fuck out of it and it still won't turn over....

the tabbed thing you use to turn the key over with has fallen off and i don't know how i can turn the cylinder over anymore.....

i'm so livid right now, all this waiting for sunday, then my balancer goes bad, i fix it, then some idiot doesn't know how to get a key out and not it's looking like i won't be driving the stang on sunday.....

someone must die

ok, so i have a worst case question here. i can easily hot-wire the car.

how do i unlock the steering wheel manually? like with a broken ignition?

thanks

Like I said on IM, you are trying to drill out the tumblers. They are what the key pushes to allow the switch to turn. Once you get them out, it will turn. It might require a large drill bit to do it.
