Is it possible for you guys to mount a 285/40/17 tire on a 17x9 wheel without causing damage to the wheel.

I had 285/40/17's mounted on a 9" rim with no problem what so ever. Hell, it's even a recommended wheel size from Nitto.

Thanks :D did you have to use less than recommended air pressure.

Not at all, it's not like I was mounting a 315 on a 9" rim. It fit just fine, no problems with center tire wear or anything of the sort. Like I said it's a recommended wheel width from Nitto.
I would like to know if Ryan was being sarcastic or if he has a valid reason behind his statement.

I'm not a tire guy here but don't forget -- Nitto's tend to run smaller than most other brands. The tire will fit the rim -- the problem might be the tire rubbing the exhaust or quad shock. Depends on your ride...on my 98 Mustang GT I'd be hard pressed to fit a 285/40/17 back there.
