I was under somewhat of the impression that those were "valve reliefs" or something of the sort. I know Marks Cometics and Flatouts both had those sort of reliefs in them. There werent in the same locations as yours are but they were there none the less. Any chance you got the wrong ones?

yeah that is sorta what i was thinking but you see the last pic. it looks like that "fire ring" is that what they are called? on the gasket has came apart and slid up. and some areas look liek the head was sliding around.

That is the fire ring and those are valve reliefs. I have a set at home and they look exactly the same. They are .040 and you'd be welcome to them for a small charge. FWIW I went to a Cometic because I didn't want to run an O-Ring. The set that I have, for an LT1, are the Rubber Coated Variety, supposedly won't seep water, paid 120 bucks for the pair and never used them. I also happen to have a brand new set of Mr. Gaskets as well, .025 compressed thickness.
