Hey guys just joined i have a black 1987 Mustang T-top with a 5.0. Its pretty much stock except the owner before me put a Thunderbird rearend in it so it has four wheel disk brakes and i put a K&N Airfilter on it. I wanna fix it up in the future but right now it has some rust issues that i think are a bit more pressing then horsepower  I will post some pics once i get my busted ass computer back from best buy of my dearly beloved but slightly rusted baby.

Welcome.
Tbird rear? Is that still 4 lug? Different gears or is disc breaks the only advantage?

Thunderbird rear is IRS, I believe.

Edit: I don't think they went to IRS until 89 per Google.

With that said, is yours an IRS or solid axle??

its still a solid axle out back someone told me it was a 7.5 instead of the 8.8 but i havent gotten underthere and made sure. i havent seen any real benefit from the swap the brakes are still pretty crappy, i had better stopping power in my 93 four banger. And yes i think i should switch out the gears but i donno im getting like 20 MPG around town and 27 highway, if i put 373's in there then that will go to shit. How late are u guys usually at sonic? im the vice pres of the wrestling club and we have practice on tuesdays so till regionals i wont be able to make it out but after that im getting super lazy lol

welcome to the site. What gears do you have now? I'm not all knowing about fox's but i wanna say that most had 3.08s out back and i've got no clue about thunderbirds. 3.73's shouldn't drop your mileage that much though.

I went from 3.42's in my truck to 4.10s and a shorter tire which gives an effective ratio of 4.69 and i only lost about 1mpg believe it or not.

Also in my camaro i went from 2.73 to 3.42 and in my mustang i went from 3.27 to 3.73 and really saw no big effect on mileage on either one of those.

I believe t-bird rears have 3.27's? They are absolutely 8.8's. I'm pretty sure it's a trac-lok rear too.

I went from 2.73's to 3.73's and did not notice any differance in city mileage. You wind up just being in a higher gear at the same rpm. I still get reasonable enough highway mileage.
