if you're considering surgery, do it. i had my surgery this morning here in pensacola with Dr. Giovanini. all i can say is wow. the relief was pretty much instant. for those who don't remember the previous thread, i had a herniated disc at L5-S1 on the right side, presssing on the sciatic nerve. the pain in my right leg was unbearable at times. i opted to just go ahead and do the surgery instead of the shots. i wanted something more permanant, and due to time constraints, i wouldn't have been able to do both (if the shots didn't work). I went in at 5:30 this morning, and was home by 11:30. total procedure lasted about and hour and a half, but the surgery only took about 30 min. the incision is only about an inch i was told. took 3 staples. i can't take the bandage off till thursday to look at it. i've still got some pain in my right butt/leg ares, but its more of a soreness than the sharp/peircing pain it was. the only bad thing is the recovery time. i'm not supposed to ride in a car or drive for 3 weeks. obviously i can't bend or twist at the waist either. i would definately reccomend this surgery and the surgen for anyone suffereing from the same problem.

Badass man :tu:

Inspired by your original post, I went in to have my back checked out. After taking 3 pints of blood and x-rays of every part of my body from every angle, I was told I have no problem. So, the pain is imaginary. Now, if only I could imagine a super model and she would become as real as this pain is, I'd be fucking set

Good deal man, hopefully it wont be long before you are back to 100%. One of my dad's friends did the shots and they didn't work, so he had the surgery. But he is a grumpy 60 year old man so Id imagine you wont be down as long as he was

Lower back, right side. When I had it for the first time I thought it was a bladder infection but turned out I was wrong. 5 years later, I still have it and in the past 2 months it got worse and didn't go away as it did before. It used to only occur later in the day, and I took that to mean as I grew more tired. Now, it's pretty much all the time. Any use of my back seems to aggravate it, twisting, bending, etc. When I went to the dr. even walking was painful, so I made a conscious effort not to bend or twist my back for a few days and it got dramatically better, but even as I type this it is still there.

I mentioned your case, and he said that I should feel pain my butt or legs if I had a pinched nerve. Pain in my arms if my neck was pinching a nerve. Said he wasn't against getting an MRI, but since I was better this time and my lower extremeties weren't in pain, it probably wouldn't find anything for us. He suggested getting a specific book on back pain and how to deal with it, and a massager type thing.

looks like i spoke too soon on the leg pain. everything was fine tuesday and wednesday morning, then wednesday afternoon, i started having some leg pain in my right leg again. now its almost excruciating. i can barely walk. i called the doctor on thursday and the nurse said that more than likely it was just nerve swelling, which was common, and would go away in a few days. by friday walking was almost out of the question. i called the hospital again and a the doctor on call returned my call and said the same thing. he told me to take 800 mg of anti-inflamitory 3 times a day along with the pain meds and it should help. i've been worried that i blew out the disc, although i still don't know how i could have done it. he said statistics would lead him to believe that it is just swelling, but there is a chance that another disc fragment could have come out. he said if it doesn't get better in a few days to call him back and he would put me on a steroid. has anybody ever heard of anyone having similiar problems? i can't find any stories like mine anywhere.
