This week I'm ordering parts for the Stang. Cams, valves, valvesprings, and tuner. I'm also going to get them ported. That said I was planning on doing it at home. So I was wondering if you guys can give me any tips, or tell me I'm retarded for trying. I was looking online and I found a place were it said I'd need new head bolts? Things like that I was wondering if you could tell me, and things to make the removal/install easier on myself. I appreciate all the help, thanks!

Since you're going to be taking the whole top-end apart you should probably get a full engine gasket set = ~$100-130(for my car at least).
Also: cam grease/lube, of course full oil change parts and coolant.

A set of new ARP head bolts is a good idea. I plan on getting all new ARP bolts for everything(intake mani and headers) but yours are much newer/more reuseable.

Head bolts have to be replaced, they are one time use torque-to-yield and can't be reused.

Do a ton of research, your not just taking out material and making them huge, you have to do it in the right places. Also take your time to make sure all ports are as close identical as possible. All this is only if you are confident enough to do it yourself, if you have the money I would consider just having them done by a reputable shop.

do not atempt to port the heads yourself if you've never done it and don't know what you're doing. I've seen first hand "home" port jobs and they can actually make your heads flow worse than when you bought them if you're not doing it right. If you feel the need to port them yourself, get a few set of practice heads to do first before you do anything you plan on putting on your car.

lol, no porting done from me, I'm sending them to Herb Yancer, I was talking about the removal/install or the cylinder heads. Things that I need/watch out for that I don't know. Also found some head bolts online at SHM http://www.seanhylandmotorsport.com/online/product_info.php?cPath=31&products_id=216&osCsid=f70683dc7e3f2cf57e80371f83c08845 How many head bolts would I need. They also have a head stud kit would I need that or is it just a waste?:shrug:

Let me know what parts your thinking of ordering and I will see if I can match or beat other prices. Better to support a local shop than some internet giant, right? Good luck with the build.

I have a spare 4.6 NON-PI motor that I don't need if you need a spare block, etc.

It's the one out of your car. It has BHG and bad Intake that's why I said spare block, etc.

I was talking to some people, and they said with the big cam I'll have PTV. They also said I'd have to notch the pistons. One would the cam cause that? (Comp XE278 ) and how hard is it to notch pistons? You have to take them out of the block I'm assuming?

I wouldn't go with cams that extreme, like I said a mod motor won't ever sound like Ryan's or Dave's, and you can pick up some good power with heads and cams that arn't that drastic, I don't think the cams Tony used needed notching.

Xe278 = .550/.550, 242/246 .050 dur, 113LSA

VT Stage 2 = .560/.575 lift, 225/235 .050" duration, 108 LSA

So the XEs have more duration then the VTs. You will want to check for PTV clearance and degree the cams for sure. People have reported that the stock cam gears have been off 2-3 degrees from each other. So 1 cam will be in perfect and the other could be 3 degrees off. So the 1 cam will not have clearence issues, but the other would.

so would new cam gears be necessary, or would degreeing them keep everything in line.

degreeing them seems to be the fix, if they are off. It also helps get the max power out of the cams by making sure they aren't off at all.
