I am so pissed right now. I went out on an easy mission this afternoon. All I wanted was to have a muffler shop cut off my crappy MAC tailpipes and weld on the stock ones I bought from JD. Simple right? I decided that it was easy enough of a job that any muffler shop can/would do it. Boy was I wrong. I stopped at the first place I found, Mighty Muffler. I pulled up and went in. They guy said how may I help you. I said I have an easy job, cut off the aftermarket pipes and weld the stock ones back on. He asked if the stock ones were on there. I said no, they are aftermarket, I have stock ones in the trunk. He akes me why I wanted to do that. I said the aftermaket ones don't fit well and I need more tire clearance (as JD can attest to, I have about .25" between my tires and the pipes). He said that the stock ones wouldn't give me any more clearance, and the aftermarket ones are built to tight tolerances. I said I know, but these don't fit well and I need more clearance. He then proceded to tell me that I do not know what I am talking about and he has a Mustang, etc. I said, jsut do it, how long is the wait. He said about an hour. I looked out in the shop. He has 3 bays. One has a van on a lift and somebody working on it, one is empty, and one has a pickup truck that nobody is touching. I was so pissed I said forget it and I left. I don't understand why someone tries to fight the customer over a simple job that they could earn some easy money on??

WHY IS IT SO HARD TO FIND SOMEBODY WHO DOES QUALITY FRIENDLY WORK?? I really am considering starting my own American performance car shop. Anyone else though about this? Anyone have a good exhaust place to go to?

Ok, I feel better now...

I had a full mac exhaust on my 90, headers back, and had no problems. Something about these, though, just don't fit right, like they weren't bent right or something.

Coming from his end, you have no idea what he had to do to the vehicle he was already working on. Most customers want their cars back before the weekend in most instances. He might have been on one of those jobs that he did not want to take his mind off of until it was finished. I will say that I work by appointment most of the time and I daily turn down people who want me to stop what I am doing and work on their car, they just have to have it done yesterday. First come first serve...you can not play favorites in this business. I was not there to observe his attitude, which is the make-it or break-it in that situation. Also, having done 3 mustang exhaust system installs, I can tell you it is not rocket science, but it is not a piece of cake either. What you wanted done would have taken me about 1/2 a day maybe more, but it would have been perfect. I am not in the exhaust business, though.

Maybe I wasn't clear that he was not alone working. My point is that he accused me, the customer, of being incompetent about my vehicle and that really pissed me off. The wait wasn't so bad as him stopping me mid sentence saying "No, you don't know what you are talking about." You NEVER talk to a customer that way. That is retail 101. I know, I was in retail for 5 years.

On a side note, would it really take 1/2 a day to cut the pipes after the muffler, slip them over the axle, slip the new ones on and weld them up? Not trying to start anything, I'm just curious as to why you think it would take you that long.

muffler shops are the worst.. THE WORST!

going to them is like sitting in the dentists chair and having him pull your molars with a set of channel-lock pliers.

on my 83, the last 3 exhaust sytems i had put on it leaked, and eventually fell off within 3 or 4 months. bullshit.

I work on an appointment-type schedule, and i see the workers point-of-view as well, but muffler shops have no excuse. they always have empty bays. if they are too busy to work on one car, they should hire more people.

At my shop, we have two people on hand for each bay, plus someone who can assist customers in the showroom.

I didn't know they do any exhaust work there. I guess I'll give NGM a call and see what he can do for me.

I blew out a Nitto DR on I-95 only 3 weeks after having the pipes put on. The passengers side rubbed against the pipe and exploded. Not a fun time at 75mph.

I agree, shit happens, but that is no excuse for shitty attitude. I try to treat my customers with respect and I try to leave the attitude at the house. It is unfortunate that you could not get the work done there. That guy probably did not want to do anything because it was friday. Exhaust shops suck.

Was it the Mighty Muffler on south Monroe?? If that is the case, that guy is a complete dickhead. I would never suggest anybody to go to that guy. I will never go there again. I don't know how they are still in business because that guy is always in a shitty mood. FUCK MIGHTY MUFFLER!!

Agreed. I had them build custom duals from the longtubes back (on the old fastback). The guy went from scratch and had the whole thing done in like 2.5 hours ($100 in '96). As a bonus, from side to side it was perfectly symmetrical.
