Car started a god awful knocking sound today, quiet at first so I just double checked everything and it was fine, no DTCs or anything.

Driving home at 60mph all of a sudden my exhaust tone flattened out and the car leaned out for 2 seconds. I pressed the clutch in and it died.

The knocking sound now is TERRIBLE, I thought the car was about to shoot a rod through the block. Heres the code it threw (as well as misfire on #3 cylinder)

P1383 - Variable Cam Timing Over-retarded (Bank 1) The comprehensive component monitor (CCM) monitors the VCT position for over-retarded camshaft timing. The test fails when the camshaft timing exceeds a maximum calibrated value or remains in an retarded position. Cam timing improperly set
Continuous oil flow to the VCT piston chamber
VCT solenoid valve stuck open
Camshaft advance mechanism binding (VCT unit)
DTC P1383 is a check of the VCT unit. Testing should not include electrical checks. Engine will idle rough, hard starting and may stall. Diagnostics and repair for the VCT unit are located in the Workshop Manual.

I'm pretty positive that knocking sound was the valves slapping the piston(s). So at the very least I'm looking at pulling off the head (again) and getting headwork. I may need pistons depending on their shape.

Assuming I need pistons I will be buying a cheap car (<$1500) and driving it everyday, while dumping money on building the car.

Oversized valves
Port the head
Forged Pistons
Forged Rods
Clevite Bearings
All ARP
etc
etc

In conclusion: Damn Fords.

I am not familiar with the Focus Variable Valve Timing but on VW's they will make a horrible knocking noise on the 1.8's. On them take the cams out and replace the cam adjuster on the back of the head. It is electric and hydrolic on a VW. Maybe the knocking is that or something similiar...Hope so for your sake.

I have the day off due to being slow at the shop I work at, so I'll get to work on my car today.

Cam gears and VCT eliminator (machined billet spacer, blockoffs, o-ring, and shorter cam gear bolt) are ordered.

I have a unique way of fixing things. Don't even try to fix it, just replace it. The less stock shit to break the better.

Would have to sell the Focus first, but details are welcome to keep me entertained.

Just pulled the valve cover off.

Timed the engine. It's perfect.

VCT went bad. Parts are ordered to eliminate the VCT. That doesn't solve the "knocking" though. Maybe I'll get REALLY lucky and I can throw the eliminator/cam gear on and go.

If not, I had my intake valves slapping my pistons. So then I'd be pulling the head off, again.
