I was trying to remove one of the rear wheels on the TR6 just now, and one of the lugs keeps spinning. Oviously the back of the stud must be stripped. How can I get the lug off to remove the wheel so I can press in a new stud? Will an impact wrench work, or will I have to use my angle grinder to cut the lug and then grind it down?

Cutting torch is your friend.

they make a nut splitter but I dont know if it would work on a wheel. Can you wedge something behind the nut (or wheel) while you try to back it off? that may get the nut started back on the threads...

It's not the thread that's stripped. It's the backside of the stud that's stripped and is spinning in the hub.

try an impact wrench, i dont that that would do anything other than spin the entire stud....... maybe get a third hand to pull the wheel out while you get the lug loosened, wouldnt that apply some pressure on the stud?

No it would just pull on the lugnut and mess up your wheel.

That would probobly end up just scraping the wheel to hell. Last time this happened to me at DT it took 2-3 people to get it off.

Can you get to the back of the stud to hold on to it with something? If you can get a socket or some vice grips or something on it to hold it then it shouldnt be to much of a problem, if you can't get to it I doubt anything short of breaking/cutting it is gonna get it off.
A guy on another forum in Atlanta had the same problem on a Mustang. He ended up getting the back of the stud spot welded and the nut came right off...of course, this was after trying a lot of other things....among those, being quote a several hundred dollar bill.

atleast it wasnt a locking lug the got stuck, you have a better chance of cutting this one off than one of those. This happened on our willys jeep becuase one side of the truck is left hand tighten and the other was right hand tighten and i didnt know and tried to twist it loose with a T-bar and reamed the teeth off of the stud/stud head. we had ours welded and gave just enough bite to get it off.

Dredz has a good idea, that has worked for me a number of times. Something else that works quite well is get a 4-way lug wrench, put the correct end on the lug nut, don't turn the lug, but yank it up and down as much as you can, that will eventually fatigue the stud till it breaks, usually takes several minutes, but it works like a champ.

Well, that was easy. I used a cutoff wheel to get it close, then ground it down flush with the wheel. I the drilled out the stud even to the back of the wheel and I popped the wheel right off. Now I just have to remove the rear halfshaft and press in a new stud.
