View Full Version : Evolution of the street car

Is it just me because I've only been driving for a few years (but been into cars much longer), but has the "street" car rapidly changed over the past few years?
I can remember a few years back 500whp "street" cars (daily drivers or weekend toys) seemed to be few and far between. I think it has alot to do with the factory boosted cars - Cobras, SRTs, etc, but I could be wrong. You do basic mods to those and you can greatly increase the power output.
Nowadays it seems that every other car out there is 375+ to the ground, whether it be a 4 banger or good ole' muscle.
Has the street car evolved with the new advances in boost, tuning, and new platforms, or is it just me?

It's called advancing technology. You do know phones are wireless now too right?

Really?
I understand its technology, but are cars moving too fast - leaving little to no room to progress?

I lived near Detroit for the first 12 years of my life and my dad has been in the auto industry for 30+ years. I've been around that kind of power all my life. I think it has just become more mainstream because of tv shows like overhaulin and rides and collector car auctions like barrett-jackson. The other aspect is that because of this resurgence, the manufacturers have started to create these special cars again (remember the AAR cuda's or any of the COPO chevy's?). The status of a car like that is what is driving the big money guys to shell it out so they can have the latest "in" car and I also think the baby boomers who are just starting to retire, have some time and some money b/c the kids are done with college and off doing their own thing are adding to the market as well. If you always wanted that muscle car as a kid but couldnt afford it then, and you can afford it now, hell why not? I think that's why you see so much more power on the streets these days.

I was reading something about how technology is going to be forced to slow down do to costs. Cars are going to reach the limit of tires, and we will have to stop, because after tires what do we have? hovercraft and personal jets? the world cant afford to transition from the jeffersons to the jetsons, so rather than advance, we'l just kind of slow down progress until it becomes mandatory to do something as drastic as completely change the infastructure of the world.

Anyone seen that commercial where the new Lexus parks itself?? I think the technology is getting a little too far ahead. yikes

Kinda what they said years ago, They claimed it would be impossible to go as fast as they are in the 1/4 mile. I would have to look it up, but if I remeber correct when people reached 9s, they thought that was the ultimate limit. There was no way a car could run faster then that due to engine and tire limits. Welp look were they are now. Never underestimate what someone can do or come up with.

Makes you wonder how much more there is to get out of the tire. Apparently the top-fuel guys say they could be doing 350+ if they let them use more nitro in their methane or some shit like that.

Do u think the top fuel or funny cars will get wider/taller tires? Its amazing how much the tire spins even now off the launch. Is it gonna take a taller/wider tire or is it gonna take a new type of rubber?

it is just another cycle of time. the same thing will eventually happen to these cars that happened to the cars from the 60's.

I don't think its quite 9k, I wanna say its like 6 or 8. The Pro-stock cars make 2,000 n/a hp, and the top fuel cars strap 45psi of boost to about the same displacement.

Yeah it takes about 800 HP alone to turn the blowers they have on their cars. There fuggin huge.
