View Full Version : Do any of you REALLY have a problem with the GTO?

Now, I know at times Tony and X will rag on the fact that the GTO is "slow" :bs: but for the sake of arguing and the fact that I don't know them, I just figured they were just being playful, sarcastic, etc...:tu:
The reason I ask is because when I went down to Miami for break I ran into some of my old F-body buddies who would not stop ragging on my car. Even after I raced some of them and beat them pretty bad the comments kept coming. I just ignored them because all they had were LT1's and third gens that were breaking down every other day and my car is still new. (<---this is not a LT1/3rdGen bashing; just pointing out that their cars kept breaking down and happened to be LT1's and 3rdGens)
Now the kicker...Vette owners! I can't stand ignorant vette owners! One of my friend's father has a vette (a 99 C5) and when I went to visit him he came out. The first thing out of his mouth..."well it's nice....but it ain't a vette. You'll need to beef it up if you want to run like one." HUH? I tried to educate him on the engine and the car, but nothing. He just kept making smart ass comments that didn't make sense.
I know the f-body guys get this alot from vette owners, but do any of you really have a problem with the GTO? If so why?

GTO?? i thought it was a cavalier:flip2:
listen man--we're all just messing with you--prolly wouldn't get so much slack if it was an LS1--with us LSx guys. it took me a while of hands on experience with the goat to give credit where its due. i like the cars a lot now, very very comfortable and not slow--and if i didn't have the SS, i'd prolly be looking at a goat...LS1 of course. i've just come to the conclusions of what americans, or MARY's--as the aussies like to refer to us, complain about, the australians could prolly give 2 shits about.
just come out and hang out a little and you prolly won't get so much shit....unless you are worse in person than on the intraweb.

Riceman's GTO was the first GTO I ever sat in, I was impressed by its power and interior seemed really nice/comfortable. If I was looking for a new car, the GTO would probably be one I looked at closely.

Take all the GTO hate with a grain of salt. Like you have read in the above posts, once people actually take a closer look at the cars most are impressed. The build quality is far better then most GM products in the states and the LSx + T56 combination is great in any platform. If you like the car, isn't that all the really matters?

I hate on GTO's because in general I hate the way they look. When designing that car they really tried hard to make it as bland as possible. That is the reason the crazy GTO's from Aussie-land look better and you all want to swap parts with those cars.
People are NOT joking when they say and think your cars look like Cavalier's and Grand Prix's.

Yea, the backseat is definetly an issue when trying to get back there. However, it is one if not THE best back seat I have ever been in. The headroom, legroom, and comfort is abosultely ridiculous for the type of car the GTO is.
I hear people talk about the looks of the GTO and how it resembles a grand prix, grand am, etc. But honestly, every freaking pontiac looks like one another. You can make the same argument about any of 'em which I'm sure is one of the reason why the whole brand is changing its image and designs. The funny part is that I get tons of looks, thumbs up, and questions from people on the road. I don't ever hear of many grand prix, grand am, cavalier drivers receiving many stares or questions....

And GTO's are slow. That isn't a joke or sarcasm, they really are. hell the FIRST 6 speed just barely broke into the 10's not too long ago. That just made me all sorts of pissed. With all the 600whp T56 GTSlows out there, ONLY ONE has gone a 10?!? And it took a blower and nitrous to do that!! (569whp)

I think regardless of what you drive you're going to get shit from someone. If car guys are only one thing, they're extremely loyal to their specific grouping of cars. In the end though we all care about one thing, knowing our American muscle cars are faster and better looking than anything else on the road:). Corvette guys for the most part are a pretty stuck up crowd from what I've seen. I know there are a few guys on here who own them though that are super nice, so thankfully that doesn't apply to all the vette owners. I personally love the GTO's, and it was a toss up for me between getting a goat or getting my GT. I've always been a fan of the stang though and my first car was a 68 coupe so I guess I was a little biased by that though, haha.

I'm about tired of all this retro bullshit. The new Camaro is butt ugly, and the Mustang is only slightly better. The Challenger looks to be at least decent, but still not a favorite of mine. The GTO IS an 8 year old car, and was designed in 1997, so that is why it's a bit dated. Another problem is they couldn't import too many of em either. It's not "based off the frame of another car from another country," it IS a car from another country. It's no different than the Infinitis, Lexuses, and Acuras sold here. Plus it's way more car than $30,000 can buy from any other manufacturer. I just wish they had options for the climate control and other stuff like the Holden's had. But the fact that we got the LS2 standard (and STILL for $15,000USD less than the Aussies could get a base model LS1) makes up for the lack of amenities.

It's $45,000 USD for a BASE LS1 Monaro, and expect to pay $60,000 if you want an HSV with an LS2 down there. It's ridiculous, but they pay it because its WORTH it. While it lives up to the GTO namesake as originally conceived, it doesn't fit the mass public's veiw of a "GTO." Even though the original GTO was just a very unassuming "Plain Jane" 2 door with a big motor. But in the UK they also got the Monaro VXR 500. While I'm not a fan of Eaton blowers, anything that comes with 500hp stock, even if its an eaton, is ok in my book! AND it was the same price as the previous years' regular VXR! A pulley, some headers, and maybe a blower cam and that thing would be insane!!

you seem touchy about your car... I dont care for camaros much either, but it is a good bang for the buck for power, just not a gto fan... too much, too little, but it is my opinion.
SloNLo_350
03-20-2007, 08:37 PM
I'm not touchy at all. just a little drunk and opinionated. I will wholeheartedly agree that it looks like a Grand Prix, and spout off Cavalier and Grand Am jokes with the best of 'em. I even still wish I could go back and get the '02 NBM SS I was looking at before I got the GTO, but it wasn't my decision to make, since (as most of you know) my parent's bought me this car. $28k car with warranty > $19,000 with no warranty... apparently (and I at least got 2 transmissions worth out of that warranty). I wasn't even too keen on the idea of a GTO when my dad first proposed it to me. Little did I know he had already talked to the dealer and they had the car on the truck headed toward my home town. I'll call my car slow, and unimpressive all day long (because it is... no joke, that shit is heavy and slow as shit!!) but, compared to the other new car offerings along side it, you can't beat a GTO. Nothing else offered in '05 and '06 had near 400hp for under $30,000. Hell, nothing under $40,000!!! But if I had the option, I probably would have taken that SS or an '04 Cobra over the GTSlow. DEFINITELY a '99 or '00 Nassau Blue FRC. I STILL want to trade the GTO for one of those... straight up with the CCW's included.
About the new Camaro... unless it has an LS3, then it is completely worthless to me. It's an ugly ass 4000lb hunk of retro bullshit with only an LS2 to push it around. While 400hp is a good bit, once you get into SRT8 weight territory, you're gonna need more power to keep up. Now the G8 intrigues me... no retro nonsense and it has better heads than my car... all it needs is a cam to wake it up a bit. But it too is heavy. If they have a GXP version of that though, that may be the first car I purchase on my own.

03-20-2007, 09:22 PM
I personally love the GTOs...they are great cars, make good power, and were one of the best offerings out there when they were new. You have 6 Car options for a Domestic RWD V8 in 05/06 (Vette, GTO, Stang, 300C, Magnum, Charger), you could get 3 of those with a manual, and 2 with a 6-speed. You look at value in those and the GTO is in my opinion the best choice, a nice smooth ride, some what sporty feel, and the best power to weight. I like it. It is the only car that you can get, that I can honestly say I would give up the z28 for.
