question for anyone whos done the rear brakes on a 99-04 gt...we couldnt get the piston to move at all using a c-clamp or the specialty tool so i looked around online and found one place that said to rotate the piston counter-clockwise...any input?
Yup, you have to twist the piston back into the caliper. If you forced them to much with the C-clamp, you might have to replace the caliper now from damaging it.

i thought the tool and rotation was onlly for cobra brakes?--but i'm no ford guy and every rear brake job i've helped do on cobra's have been absolutely ridiculous. i know the tool we used was a cube bought from a local parts store and we had to grind off two of the four little posts for it to work properly. and removing the parking brake cable to access a caliper bolt was a muthabitch.
good luck bud
yup, gt brakes screw in also on the rear.

So do 6 cyl rears. I HIGHLY recommend new calipers now that you pushed on those threads that hard.

They're not a pain in the ass..... as long as you have the correct tool, which the cube isn't. It'll work, but it sucks.

i've used the cube many times and had no problems..... i can't recall on fords on what direction they rotate but FWIW on a Saturn (the last set of brakes i did) they rotated clockwise......

I recently did the Brakes on my 1999 V6 and they rotated Clockwise as well. Very easy to do since I had the right Tool to do them. Check with Auto Zone for the Loan a Tool Program they have.

you have to rotate it clockwise and the cube is a bitch to use if the piston is stiff. i bought a rear caliper set from matco couple months back that makes everything hella easier. i have to admit i dont see any advantages to the twist in piston.

Just an FYI, the piston screws in only due to the parking brake mechanism. The PB lever inside the caliper has a threaded sleeve at the fulcrum. The piston has a threaded rod that threads into the lever so that when the lever gets pulled, it forces the piston out. The pads have pins that lock into the grooves in the piston face which keep the piston from spinning. IIRC, pulling your parking brake lever from time to time is needed to keep the calipers adjusted to the wearing of the pads.
