my roommate just bought a busted ass 91 bronco II

it leaks tranny fluid

hes been topping it off with regular dexron III, however i just noticed on the dipstick is says use Dexron II

well now the tranny is slipping BAD and doesnt want to engage

could the different fluid types cause this. ive never even heard of dexron II

they are different, i do know that, dexron II is a 5W-20
while III is heavier at 0-30w... how that would effect the tranny is beyond me... but i would use the correct atf.

As far as I know I can't find any Dexron II for my GN, it also says Dexron II on the dipstick. I'm pretty sure Dexron III is just a new formulation of the older Dexron II which was the "new" thing back in the day. I use Dexron III in my tranny and it doesn't slip at all. I think his tranny is fucked up.

Dexron III will not hurt a Dexron II tranny. Can't hardly find Dexron II fluid anymore, and the III is just the newer formula designed to work in transmissions using II and III.

Last two posts are on the money. Dexron II systems are compatible with Dexron III fluid, but DIII systems are not recommended for use with DII fluids.

Right. Should have made that clear. You don't put Dexron II in a Dexron III spec tranny. Other way around is fine.

one of the hardlines going to the tranny cooler was had been rubbing on the swaybar so long it wore a hole in it. i fixed it, topped it off with 3.5 quarts of fluid

runs fine

Eh, it's a Ferd. Expect nothing better. :lol:
