Ok so I am thinking of buying a shotgun to add to my ever growing arsenal.

Questions are:
What is the shortest legal barrel?
If I get a short barrel will a full choke compensate for it being short?

IIRC 18" barrel is the legal limit. from what i have gathered it is measured from the ending of the chamber. my friend has one of the Home Defender 12GA and it is 18" from the start of the chamber.

18" is the legal limit, I am pretty sure. You will not need a choke unless you are getting it for skeet shooting. If you are getting it for that, you can buy a different barrell for about $100 on ebay and it takes about 15 seconds to change out. I bought a Remington 870 Express from Sports Authority a little while back for about $240 or so. It came with a 28" ribbed barrell on it. They had one there with an 18" barrell, but, it was about $50 more IIRC. The guy working the counter that day told me about buying the barrell on e-bay and showed me how easy it was to change. Yeah zach I wasnt going to buy it for skeet. It will probably be rock salt and normal rounds shot out of it. I was just getting it as short as possible so I could roof mount it in the car.

The only thing a choke tube is going to do is keep the shot patterns tighter at longer distances, which, on a personal defense shotgun is not really necessary. Also, rock salt is pretty much a useless round...

No just non-lethal i.e. bean bags, rubber bullets, tear gas, etc. The rock salt is more of a personal defence at the house. As zach was saying its pretty useless after 5-8 ft.
