Well, to make a long story short, I talked my Dean into letting me start my Masters degree without taking the GRE. I had to score 1000 or higher before Nov 15 to stay int he program. I went and took it this afternoon, and with only studying this morning, made an 1100! Now I can stay in school and finish the thing off. I want to buy something to celebrate, but I don't know what. I'm thinking gears, but then I'd need an aluminum driveshaft, so maybe LCAs. Anyway, I feel so relieved to get that off my back!

you dont need an aluminum driveshaft if you get gears.

Don't the vibrations get bad above a certain mph without the d/s? BTW, I'd go with 4.30s:)

not really as long as the gears are installed properly

i'd consider the d/s..thats a lot of gear...gotta be gettin close to the critical speed. of course cars have shorter, and probably fatter more durable shafts than trucks. is it steel?

Congratulations Tom- that's a big deal. Cool about skipping the GRE!

Carlton at Nationwide Transmissions did mine for ~$110 (I forget the exact amount now).

Get 4.30's at the very least- please don't do what the rest of us have foolishly thought was the sensible limit at 4.10's- that's 5.0 thinking. You'll be disappointed in six months if you don't go with 4.30's or 4.56's with the Cobra motor.

As mentioned, the driveshaft isn't mandatory. T actually ran into increased vibration at speed with the aluminum unit and reverted back to the stocker.

My homework tells me that if the gears are properly installed and if you ensure that the angles at both the front and rear U-joints of the DS are equal (hope that made sense-if not I'll try again), you'll eliminate most of the vibes. At that point, the aluminum unit will take care of the rest and you'll be smooth as glass. :headbang:

If you look at your stock driveshaft its actually weighted. They do this to balance everything from the factory. So when I put in my perfectly balanced aluminum driveshaft I actually got an untolerable amount of vibration. I used to have a website that helped explain all this crap, but its gone.

I dont think you will need a driveshaft. And get 4.30s or 4.56s if you dont do alot of highway driving or plan on going with a poweradder in the future. Otherwise get 4.10s

Do you have a number for Carlton? I'm getting closer and closer to pulling the trigger on these gears...

Nationwide Transmission on Capital Circle over by Tia's.

You want to speak to him and setup an after-hours job.
