Where does ford put the block number on the 302. I need to find out what year the block is so i can get a starter that i know for sure is the right one.
The one i have on it works just every once in awhile it likes to grind.

It's on the rail by the oil pan. Should be like E4 something. As far as I know tho, pretty much any year 302 is going to use the same type starter. The 302 doesn't use shims like chevy's. I use a 93 F-150 starter, which happens to be the same as a 94/95 starter on my 88.

get one for a 93 cobra. that should cure all your problems.

Auto zone's part numbers are
DLG581S $130
DL3205S $ 94

advance auto
97101 $125
P3205S $95

it should look like this

instead of this

if it's grinding make sure you have all the teeth on the flexplate. does it do it as it starts or when you let off the key?

I dont think the 93 would work due to header room but im looking at the one travis sent. Atleast i could get my money back on the starter i got from autozone. The one from advance(3180) would not catch but one time that was it. Auto Zone(3124) every so often grind while engaging. I dont want to mess up the flywheel which looks fine.

the 93 is smaller allowing more room in the header area..... i've put many of those on all year mustangs because it's a cheaper alternative to a nice hi-tq mini starter. not as good but alot better than a stock one in the second picture......is the block plate on the car? that would be the "shim" that would make it grind or not......

The one I posted is the same as what you guys are talking about. It's a "high torque mini-starter".

i know that i was just stating that normally a 93 Cobra starter (especially if you know a shop or an employee that get's a discount) is normally WAY cheaper than the nice starters like Ford Racing, CSR, Powermaster, McLeod, etc. since normally a "high torque mini-starter" start in pricing at $190 and go up to $350+...... the 93 Cobra can be had an almost autoparts store for less money right now. not in 3-5 days for shipping..... just my .02 and i wander what brand that mini-starter is he's selling for $100 shipped......

EDIT : not to mention the ones from the parts store have atleast a 1 year warranty.... some even have a LLT warranty....

What im going to do is get under the car and find the block # which should be on the drivers side front on the rail like tony said then im going to count the teeth on the flywheel and i think i will be able to get the right starter on it which at this point im sure going to half to be a high torque starter. On the cobra starter ben do i just move the wires down to the solinoid on the starter from my solinoid on my fender.

The 93 cobra starter is the same starter as the 94/95 starter and ~92-95 F-150. Also it is the same one Ford Racing sells under the part # M-11000-A50.

The mini starter needs constant power. You take the current 4g wire and flip sides on the solenoid by the battery. And put that to the lug on the starter. Then you run a new wire down from the switched side of the solenoid by the battery to the new starter solenoid switch. It is a really easy swap.

I had to check my block numbers, they were right by the starter. Like if you're laying underneath it, the numbers were kind of behind the starter from where you're looking.
