friends looking at getting a 98 firebird trans am. theres one for sale here in pc. its at a car lot. its an auto :(. body is in great condition black, leather seats, no rust or dents. 122k miles :(. its an ls1. what kinda problems should he expect to get out of the motor right now. what should we look for when we go up and take a look at it?

Window motors, headlight motors.

if its an LS1, its got to be a formula. firebirds = v6. LS1's are stout motors. i'd be worried about everything else around the motor though. check for obvious fluid leaks, if its t-tops make sure the top seals aren't leaking, window and light motors like patty mentioned. see if you can take it to a local mechanic to do a used car inspection, if you don't know what to look at.

definitely check t-tops and window motors, they go so fast it seems. tony is right though, the engine is the least of the worries unless it is blowing smoke or making one hell of a noise. best bet is ahve it inspected by someone who would know.

Make sure to listen for any unusual sounds from the rearend and that the tranny shifts ok, those are the weak points in the drivetrain. Out of curiosity, what lot is it at?
