hey guys had a quick question for ya'll. i just put my truck in the shop today for what sounds to me like a bad valve or a sitcky lifter. it only happens when the truck hits overdrive (45 mph and higher) and i give it gas... it usually only does it before the truck downshifts but will occasionally carry over. It soudns to me like a dull valve tap but can get pretty loud. I took a trip to athens on saturday and going uphill with the cruise control on sounded awful and about 30 mins outside athens, my check engine light came on. i've never overheated the truck or run low or not changed my oil, and i only really started hearing the noise when i installed my cold air intake (which im assuming it was making the noise before but i couldnt hear it because of the intake resonator). Any other ideas? thanks guys

Sounds like labor knock to me. If it just started doing it, you may have gotten some bad gas. With my old Mustang (06 GT) the cold air kit required a retune so that it would not be lean. Even with the JLT tune, my car was very lean and would knock like a mo-fo. If some fresh or higher octane gas doesn't help, you might want to log some air/fuel ratios.

The symptoms you describe sounds more like pinging or knocking than valve train noise. Pinging is common in top gear at low rpms and low throttle position. Get the engine light read and report back.

i just got a call from porter's and the owner/ head mechanic said he drove my truck and he says its an exhaust leak.... i can see that, but im not 100% convinced.

That is also very possible. I think the least likely of your problems is valvetrain noise. Valvetrain noise will be there all the time, and not just top gear with slight acceleration. Did they read the SES light?

the SES light was off by the time i took it to them, would they still be able to see if i threw a code and what code i threw?

A dodge with an Exhaust leak.. Who woulda thunk it? I used to get them in with cracked exhaust manifolds all the time.

Yeah, my old roommate had a wrangler and went through two manifolds in under 50,000 miles.
