i finished up swapping my leaky valve seals tonight and took the car out for a spin.

for some reason it seems to fall on its face at around 5-5.5k rpms

i can see anything i did from the valve seal swap affecting this, i installed the springs in the same spots, didnt mess with any of the shims.

my car is really loud, but i could have sworn i heard pining. odd thing is my car never ever pings, so i dont see why it would, especially in this cold weather

the only thing i could think of is i got gas a couple days ago at a gas station i usually dont get gas at, and tonight was the first time ive gotten on it since then, and it falls on its face. think i might have gotten some shitty gas

ever happen to anyone, any ideas

I actually just got a tank of bad gas in Jens car. It would stumble and sputter and when we refilled, its all back to normal. Honestly, I get either AMOCO or BP(both Amoco gas) all the time in my car and I have never got a bad tank of gas(knock on wood). Hope thats it and youre not getting any of my luck.

well my dumbass is still getting a puff of blue smoke on startup

i hope i didnt put the seals on too tight and break them (i did this to one of them and caught the mistake, hopefully not more)

ugh, time to pull the springs off again tonight

I have never heard of anyone putting them on too tight, only to loose. Thats strange. Good luck with it.

when i was tapping them on, i tapped one of them too hard and the valve guide popped through the seal

i caught that one, i just hope theres not more i didnt catch, find out tonight though

Aren't your springs getting in today? Overnighted stuff usually gets in by 10.

They arent here. There is overnight and overnight plus. Overnight plus is garunteed by 10, plain overnight isnt. I saved 8 bucks and shipped just plain overnight, it was $38 for shipping already.:-o

Stay away from 76 Station. My friends dad works for Texaco/Shell and research shows that they use horrible gas. In the test results the cheap Murrays Gas Station did better than 76 Station. He recommends Chevron w/ Techron or Shell. I guess you get what you pay for

Ryan,

I've got bad gas from Petro more than once. My theory is that these stations sell very little Premium so you get gas that's been sitting in the tank for a long time. FWIW I only will use BP, Amoco, Shell or Chevron, don't even try any of the unknowns any more unless it's an emergency. I also stay away from 76.

FWIW, I get gas there a lot, and I've never had a problem. I also use Gate a lot as well. As long as the station is relatively modern and kept up well, the gas is all going to be almost exactly the same. You run into problems at shittier and/or older stations where the underground tanks aren't properly maintained and cleaned. As we all know it's possible to get a bad tank occasionally, but for the most part, anywhere clean is ok.

BTW I've also read a few studies and they say that basically all gas is the same regardless of vendor. There are only a handfull companies running oil refineries out there and all of the oil only comes from one place, da ground. So most of my preferences for particular stations is probably superstition and coincidence.

Maybe the gas truck just left before you pumped your gas, it stirs up all the debris in the bottom of the tank. Usually wait days after I see a gas truck at a gas station to pump my gas there.

Yeah i'm still seeing blue smoke at startup too, also at idle sometimes(the rocker bolts arent sealed properly-i never waited fot the shit to dry...) i'm gonna take them off sat and seal them and let it dry, and than see if that solves my problem, if not than i dunno....BTW if these damn heads dont make me anymore power (now that i changed the springs) than they did so far i'm gonna ditch them and get some TEAs..

for anyone who is interested it wasnt bad gas, it was a retarded owner

i left the hose clamps on the bellows that attaches the MAF to the TB loose and unmetered air was getting in cause extreme detonation and knock retard

upon testing out this fix, i caused myself and even bigger problem

I can verify that, my truck is running like shit no matter what gas i put in it, but it would TOTALLY hang at 4000 rpm after i ran 76 gas, but this past fill up i used shell and even with it extra lean, it doesnt even lose power at the top of first and holds it well up to 4000 in 2nd and will actually shift in a resonable amount of time. I'm definitely a shell man now i think! Amoco and BP are alright too, thats all I used back home.
