Can anyone give me a suggestion on what to get? I want to set up storage on my home network, that i can access both while at home and away and also have ther ability to allow varioius people acccess to files, but only certain files/folders for some people. Security of the data is important too.

I use a Linksys NAS200 with 2 320gb drives in a raid 1 config. You can config it to do everything you want.
Alot of the reviews state that it is slow, but I haven't had any issues and the speed doesn't bother me. I stream music and videos from it without any problems.

I build a linux box that will do what you want. VPN, multi TB storage, private shares, VoIP, faxing, just about anything you can think of.

I just put in a Windows Home Server. Just took a used box (1gb ram, 2x500gb SATA HD, no need for monitor/keyboard/mouse) and downloaded the trial version.
Been working great the past month, does auto backup, can be setup for remote login, extranet, remote control of PC's (WOL, etc), shared folders, etc.
The only thing I am waiting for is a critical patch which fixes a bug if you end up using shared folders and edit the files in certain programs like MS Money, they corrupt, otherwise, i am McLuvin this setup.
Already did a restore for a crashed hard drive on my work PC, up and running in 45 mins, just plugged in a USB drive with the drivers it had already stored for me on the WHS and booted from the restore DVD.. DONE..
Is opensource for addons. http://www.wegotserved.co.uk/
