View Full Version : feels like I'm dragging a house

Okay...let me feel you in on what's happened in the past year so you can fully understand the limits I'm at right now with my motor. It took almost a year to get the motor built...I'm not going to say what shop I took it to.

I got the motor back and everything was fine. I let my wife drive the car to work one morning...(she left her keys in my truck the night before) and I couldn't bring them back to her.

She drove all the way from Bannerman Rd to Quincy in second gear. That's when the motor locked up. I got there 40 min later and it was still pegged at 340 degrees.

I pulled the motor sent it to her uncle's speed shop in Miami. I got the motor back a few months ago and have been fighting it ever since.

Everything on the motor worked fine..carb..intake...ignition..now nothing seems to work.

The motor will idle fine..it revs fine when it's not in gear. When you put a load on it, it feel like I'm pulling my house down. There's no get up. My Tahoe has more power than it does.

I've replaced the holley 700dbl pumper and put a BG 650 on it..I've replaced the old victor jr intake and put an edelbrock air gap on it, checked all the MSD ignition parts and all work fine.....we've even made sure the cam wasn't 180 off. I've done plugs and I've checked leak down on all pistons. Everything seems fine.

I can't figure it out. I'm running out of patience with it. It's not burning oil and it's not running too rich......

Does anyone want to buy a restored corvette with a freaking anchor as an engine?

We put the same stuff back in the motor that was there before she overheated it. It dyno'd at 453 hp...but it acts like it's got 7hp right now.

Let me re-phrase that. It's all new stuff...just the same specs.

Probably fuct-up the coil with the high heat.

Whats the condition of the tranny? If she drove in 2nd gear and the engine had that much heat in it to lock up. It probably fubar'd the tranny too. You say it revs fine outta gear, I would take a close look at the tranny.

It's fine out of gear or at least it seems to be. It has a 3500 stall but when I try to launch, it falls on it's face. Right when it should be breaking the tires loose it dies. I have the coil mounted on the firewall off away from the motor.

Have you checked your fuel filter or fuel pressure. Could be a clogged filter or faulty pump.

Ya, check the tranny out. Does the tanny fluid smell funny? Like roasted almunds?

I took the cartridge out of the filter and no change. I think it's getting plenty of fuel because the glass on the bowels shows it in the glass. I took the breather off and the hood off and went up a hill...gas sprayed on the windshield...like it was getting too much gas. Its the same symptoms with both the 750dbl and BG...it's actually a demon so I don't think it's the carb...


The tranny fluid smells fine.

We checked to see if the cam was 180 off by valves and damper mark....

what would a 350 run like if the cam were 180 out?

like tony said sounds like a tranny problem probably not going to first and its starting in 3rd gear or overdrive does it shift into higher gears as your driving?ok otherwise ?the coverter could be fried too tite, if it revs fine outa gear and when it goes into gear it fucks up, then it must be tranny.alot of times if you have a huge cam and not producing enough vaccume the tranny dosnt get whats needed.
