the hood on my car is not factory and was originally on there when i bought the car. over the past years there is a small section on the pass side on the back of the hood where the clearcoat is starting to peel off the hood. its pretty small in some parts but there is one part that seriously concerns me as it get worse and worse every time i wash the car because water gets under the clear and causes it to peel back worse. the bad spot is already about 1.5" in diameter
my questions are one, is there any way to temporarily stop this (i know its ghetto but i was thinking about sealing it with clear nail polish), and two is it possible to reclear the hood or to strip the clear off and put new clear down, and three what would question #2 cost
thanks

I bet you can find someone to completely repaint the hood for $150 or so. If you just recleared it, I'm sure it would be less.

Clear nail polish works, but VERY temporarily...I've used it to cover up some small rust spots on my hood and quarter panel (about 1/2" in size). But it only lasted through a couple car washes, then I had to re-apply. I've been doing that for about 3 years now...but hey, the rust hasn't spread.

you can re-clear the hood. you have to get rid of all the flaking clear as it'll still lift under the new clear. you have to lightly sand it back to where it is good yet not take off any base coat.
to clear it it would take no more than a quart of clear. the clear i use is sold by the gallon and the clear kit (in gallon form) cost ~$150..... you might be able to get it done at a shop cheaper cause when they paint some other parts they can mix up a little extra clear and clear it and there will be less waste.... i'd say you shouldn't be looking at more than ~$250-$300 could be less but i doubt it'll cost more than that at a shop....

You can reclear IF the paint hasnt become damaged or chalky. I would just peel off what you can with your fingernails and wetsand it down...making sure you dont take off paint (hard to tell with white, the clear appears white when you wetsand). Take off what you can by hand then go at it with some 1500 and 200 grit, then buff it and wax it to seal it.
If alot comes off it's best to reclear. Really its best to reclear or repaint anyway since who knows how thick the base coat is. Dont sand through the base!
