well looks like i might end up sellin my car and getting a z28, with the ls1 of course:) . for those of you with f-bods, how do you like your cars? is there anything important i should know about these cars? i just cant pass up a car that runs mid 13's stock, and has 12's potential with a couple hundred bucks. :flip2:

Not too many issues with the LS1. I would try and find a car that hasn't been modded at all. I see lots of autos and they're fast, but I prefer a stick. If you can afford it go for a 2000 - 2002, a large number of those cars actually have the LS6 block complete with 4 bolt mains if I read the latest article correctly. Apparently they were put together in a plant located in Mexico. I know LT1's much better but honestly if I had my choice now, I'd be driving an LS1. Upgrades are still more pricey than with the LT1 but prices are coming down. SOM and Tally TransAm know more about these cars than I do though.

LS1s have 6 bolt mains. Most likely gonna need to upgrade the hydraulics in 98-00 LS1 manual trans cars. I would get an auto if i were to buy another one.

yeah i was thinking an auto and i am glad you say that cause that just convinces me more. what is your reasoning?

Slow ET

Well as you get up into the power levels of 400+rwhp in a manual car... the rear is the weak point. An auto exerts less initial force on a launch than a clutch being dumped at xxxx RPM. A simple $800 verter can typically shave .3-.5 seconds off your ET.

Btw, Grand Nationals are the DARK SIDE :p

Yeah dude go with an auto! If you are looking for good consistent times, they are the way to go! Its funny how the only time I dont get ragged on for having an A4 is at the track lol
The rears will def last longer like SOM said. just look at 97TA....pulling 1.6's? on a stocker all day and is going strong.
I'm bout to upgrade to some bigger tires and say hi to the 12's soon myself.

to drag race, go auto

daily fun i prefer m6

98 tend to dyno around 290 stock
99-00 around 300
01-02 around 310

once you start modding though everything equals out.

id stay away from 98's only for the reason that i fucking hate individual coil packs and perimeter bolt valve covers

lemme take you for a ride and youll be sold

i'd say 01+ for the LS6 intake, and try to find one with headers only(hard find i know) and that might save you some $$ and trouble.

m6 = fun

m6 = fun

True, but not having to press a clutch in traffic is pretty cool too. Never missing a gear is pretty fun too, but overall you are correct. Just saying, each has its advantages

Tally TransAm

01-02 are more expensive though

but besides the better intake, they have better manifolds, better heads, and better clutch and hydrolics

ill still take a 99 though
all that other stuff can be changed, not a fan of piston slap though

(do get jealous of lid and cutout 02's running fuggen 12.8's :finger: )

stock lid :flip2: Those wheels are good luck. Ill put down $200 saying you run a best tonight ryan.

Tally TransAm

"stock" slp lid

granted the raceweight was probably 3200#'s and the DA was damn close to negative

i think ill run a new best tonight, just hope its enough to get me booted for no cage

Slow ET
11-19-2003, 09:19 AM
Yeah you might get booted... forgot about that. My car at SDR weighed 3600lbs with me, stock rims, and 1/4 tank. I cant see pulling out 400lbs at Gville. I added up what extra stuff i took that i didnt at SDR and it added up to ~93lbs. With wheels maybe a max of 130-140 lbs... so ill guess 3450ish raceweight back theen

I dyno'd 301 stock at extremes dyno with just an airlid... no K&N... not that means much...lol... I have a 98... I love it...

man-- good choice on the LS1. i love mine--try to jump into an '01 or later. i think that LS6 intake really does a lot of good.

Tally TransAm
11-19-2003, 10:11 AM
no way man

my raceweight at sdr last time was 3410

i had everything in the interior except rear seats, and passenger seat. plus i had those heavy ass wheels.

at g-ville that day you didnt even have door panels in your car (nan interior), drop another 80-100 for the wheels add 50 for your weight over mine. you had to be 32-something

the reason the 01-02 dyno higher is the heads, 231 casting heads for a few cfm more throughout the lift range than previous 853 castings

the intake is actually only worth about 5-8 hp on a stock car

SDR raceweight: 3585 w/ me, stock rims, 1/4 tank, !rear seats, !spare, !jack

going by colonel's list:
(extra stuff i didnt take out at my 3600 weight)

5...!Amp, Monsoon
4...!Antenna, bracket
20..!Door panels
5...!Floormats
3...!Panels, under steering wheel
34..!Seat, passenger's
7...!Speaker panels, hatch
5...!Speaker panels, rear passenger's
15..!Speakers

= 98lbs

Stock rims ~48lbs each
front skinnies with 8ply tire ~ 25
net savings for front: ~46
fats with DRs ~ 38
net savings for rear: ~20

= 66lbs

total 164

3585-164 = 3421

dont do it for the extra money you put into buying a z you can put into your mustang and be faster for 3 grand you can have a low 11 sec sn 95

Bryan02TA

did the track get you that down on your car? Can't go wrong with an LS1 for sure, i'll probably own one one day as well. They are mid to low 13's stock....with a good driver, don't forget that. Remember that white Transam at the track running 13.9's and 14's all day???....not a good driver.

17TH SVT
11-19-2003, 05:46 PM
no my times did not get me down. my car would break 14's if i had a few more runs. only ran 3 times and first two times missed 3rd, last time had no traction. i just need a newer car to last me through college and something a bit more reliable. my car is great but i have to work on it a lot and i cant afford to be without a car. :alf:

Greg Kulbick
11-19-2003, 08:32 PM
That's why I got rid of my 95. I was spending more repairing it than modding it. It was at that point where all the old stuff on the car gets too old and fails.

Bryan02TA
11-19-2003, 09:04 PM
i know exactly how u feel. same reason i got rid of my 94, well, that and that it was so fucking slow. Good luck man.
