FL316.2024 Coasting prohibited.--The driver of any motor vehicle, when traveling upon a downgrade, shall not coast with the gears or transmission of such vehicle in neutral or the clutch disengaged. A violation of this section is a noncriminal traffic infraction, punishable as a moving violation as provided in chapter 318.

wow, I'd hate to see the fines for this if they watched me drive

ok...random.

so why is it illegal? it's not like you can't hit the brakes to slow down. plus, how is anyone gonna know if you're in neutral or not?

exactly, this is one of those weird laws that have no reason for existance. i wonder if anyone has ever been hit with this

edit: this falls under the ticketing category "careless driving"

probably geared(pun intended) to 18 wheelers and large trucks vs. those notorious DOT officers along the interstates, although i dont know anywhere in florida with a significant enough "downgrade" to warrant that.

Engine braking is a thing of the past. It accelerates wear something fierce.

With how often I drive to Gainesville, I just count down the mile markers to I-75 like counting sheep.

When rented a car in Hawaii on Maui, they had a specific clause in the agreement for people intending to drive up and down Mt Haleakalā (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Haleakala_crater.jpg) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Haleakala_crater.jpg.

I had to sign an acknowledgement that I would drive the car all the way down the mountain with the transmission in low 1. When they went over it, I asked "You seriously want me to beat on the transmission like that?" The girl looked at me and said "If the transmission fails, you'll have brakes to stop the car. If the brakes fail, the transmission isn't going to really help. We have plenty of people who overheat the brakes from riding them all the way down the mountain." I had no problem following their recommendations after seeing how big the drop-offs were.

I don't see that same problem in Florida.

I've also seen signs on I95 up the east coast titled "Emergency Pull Off". I guess those are for the trucks that had brake failures and rubbing one out when you just can't wait.

Driving down south, highway miles/some city with my wife driving = 27.4 mpg
Driving down south , highway miles/some city with ME driving = 32.2 mpg

Same vehicle, 05 Scion XB, 5 speed.

With just my own stupid lil gas mileage tests, I can pick up anywhere from 5-7 mpg just by changing how I drive. Coasting can be a huuge part of it.
