So this isnt exactly new because I noticed it last year. It was sudden. It happened around the last time I made the trip to Tallahassee. It is running super rich, like you can smell the fuel. The check engine light comes on after you are cruising, not under a load. I dont know what it is yet because I havent found anywhere that can scan it for me. (OBD1) I thought it was just o2 sensors but I replaced them both and same thing. It burned a 1/4 tank of fuel just going up the turn pike. I dont have cats, nor smog pump. I think it may be the MAF or some other sensor but I dont know. I cannot afford to drive it the way its running. Its not misfiring, it runs just fine but really really rich. The check engine light comes on every time.

i'm going to take a shot in the dark here, either MAF, IAT (if equip), or MAP or a combination of the three
I would guess IAT or ECT.

yup forgot about the ECT..... they love to make a 5.0 run rich....

Yea I had also heard it could be the ECT. But I mean would it matter that the gauge still works? How can I find out if its the MAF, cuz I thought it might have something to do with that. My thing is I dont have like a scanner or anything so how can I figure out what it is with limited tools? Without replacing every single sensor on the car lol

there is a sending unit for the temp gauge and an ECT sensor that sends the temperature to the computer. 2 completely different sensors.
you can always go to a local parts store and more than likely they will scan the car for free and tell you what the code is. i think autozone and advance offer this service.
you can clean the MAF sensor with MAF sensor cleaner. but getting it scanned will more than likely tell you what is the problem.

or if you don't feel like dealing with the people at the parts store you can try to read codes this way.

The computer ECT sensor is on the passenger side. It's screwed into the black heater pipe running on the intake. The gauge ECT is screwed directly into the lower intake on the driver side.

Yes i have found that out about the temp sensors but on my truck my map sensor went out and the truck ran like poop till i unpluged it.

Cool, thanks for the pointers. I have yet to find a store that can scan OBD 1, but I will try the reading of codes thing by myself. I will see how much the ect is and I may just buy one the eliminate that just in case. As well as the MAF cleaner.
