So I took my heads into see if buddy's machine shop could fix em. I have to go back tomorrow when their welder guy is in. Anyways they said that the set of valves in the area getting worked on as well as the ones next to it will need a valve job. He said it was due to the heat. Why is this? What is involved in a valve job anyways?

thanks

what's wrong with your heads that they have to be welded?

Maybe the heat warps the seats and they have to be recut.

You should've waited to ask this questions in a couple weeks, I haven't had a chance to look at my head porting book yet. :D

A typical three angle valve job consists of bottom, seat, and top cuts. You can check the contact between the valve face and seat by using some lapping compound and twirling the valve in your hands. Take a look at the valve face and seat, there should be a dull grey line that is consistent in width around the whole face/seat. If not, repeat one more time. If its still not consistent, the valve does not seal properly... bent valve or messed up seat.

Exactly.

so all the valve job does it make sure it seats properly? Why does heat make me need this? I have to take the valves out to have them do this anyways? Is the seat going to warp?

A valve jobs helps promote better airflow (if cut/polished correctly) and seal up the combustion chamber. Typically exhaust valves run much hotter than intakes and are more likely to failure. And costs (if you just bring them the heads) should be around $100 depending on what they need to do.
