I was in pre-school in Orlando (close enough to see it.) Even that young I knew something was wrong when the smoke trail split in two.



We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for their journey and waved goodbye and 'slipped the surly bonds of Earth' to 'touch the face of God.'


I think they are saddend by the lack of public interest anymore.

Pretty sure I was in pre-school at the time, don't have really any recollection of it though. It is extremely sad how much it has faded from memory.

In 2nd grade, Mrs Edwards class watching it on TV. I remember it like it was yesterday....

Was only 3.... Had to learn about it in school. Yet, another american tragedy I wish never happened.

Junior year in high school in French class.
Being in NJ, there wasn't as much allure to the shuttle program. I remember watching the first launch in school, but after that, you were on your own to see it on TV (ie skip school).

When our principle made the announcement was made over the PA system, the principle (named Dr Richard Cunningham - really) said "The space shuttle Challenger has been destroyed on liftoff". I was thinking "Holy shit! Destroyed!?!?! Did the Russians destroy it? Are we going to war?" It wasn't until later in the day that some other people clarified with a slightly better word - "exploded". But for an hour, or so, I thought we were going to war.

I was stationed at Barksdale AFB, LA. Wow.
