View Full Version : Cooling issues
My cobra seems to have a cooling problem of some kind. It has been running pretty hot. Also it built up so much pressure it cracked my coolant resevior. So now coolant sprays in to the engine bay when it gets hot. I took the thermostat out because I figured that it was the problem. I put it in some boiling water and it opened up. Anyone know what the problem is?

this is the problem i have been having with my car the auto place said my raditaor was bursting at the seals that why this stuff was happening. So much pressure built up on mine it busted one of the hoses and then tonight the whole radiator went. So be careful with that. Dun know if ur problem is same as mine but mine was doin the same thing.

Garden hose your radiator&hoses out. Just because the thermo opens at boil (212) doesnt mean it's opening all the way, or at the right temperature. Cheap part, might as well replace it :joystick:

Replace the thermostat first. A suggestion is get it from Auto Zone. I can't remeber the exact name its R somthing and only AZ cares it( its like there off brand name). I had the same problem and was told to do this and now my truck runs 20deg cooler. If you want to flush the rad. I have a cap that the center is cut out of it and I welded in a garden hose fitting. Just take the hoses off put on the cap and turn on the hose. Good luck and let me know if you need some help.

there was a cooling problem recall on 96 cobras that you might want to check out!
lets see. I know about the TSB. Also I just got the car repaired from the front end damage it had and the radiator was one of the peices replaced. Im thinking they might not have burped the system correctly or filled it properly. After doing some research they are a little different than the old 5.0s. Ive been told to get a new 16lb cap, T-stat, fill at crossover tube not resevoir, and burp the system. Also that Napa is where I need to go for the T-stat. Hopefully I can get this shit done this week.

Just a tip for all you f-body guys, Auto Zone DOES NOT carry the correct t-stat for the LT1, go to Advance or Napa or if youre smart, buy a Hypertech 160*. My car ran hot for 3 months and as soon as I changed out the AZ t-stat for an Advance t-stat, viola, I was running normal again.

as i recall 96_ws6 has enough cooling issues, so why would T want to buy a f-body? :funny:
also, Bo, of course Advance has the right one :alf: , what were you thinking going to Autozone

I actually do most of my shopping at AutoZone because there are 2 within 3 miles of the house. Good business comes down to 3 things...location, location, and location!

Check your radiator cap. When is the last time you have gotten a new raditor cap. A bad cap will not keep your system pressurized and will make you overheat all the time.

ya Im thinking this may be part of the problem. When they replaced all the shit at the body shop i think they left the original cap on. Plus now that the resevior is cracked there is no way to keep it pressurized.
