Well I swapped my stock cams for some Comp XE274 cams and started the car up last night. The valvetrain was very noisy. Not enough lifter preload. The base circle on the cam was smaller by .010". I measured the diameter and got 1.875" when it should be 1.895" at a minimum. I called Jason Steen and he said the same thing happened to him and he had to put some .020" shims under the lifters which is exactly the size I thought I would need. Comp advertises these as drop in replacements meaning.....no shims or lash caps needed. To top it off I bent a power steering line in the process so now its leaking. I've already torn the car down and put the stock cams back in. I'm sending the other ones back to Comp for some new ones. It really sucks cuz now I'm back where I started but I'm about $200 poorer after buying a new power steering line and all the tools/gaskets/bolts/oil etc. that I needed. So I don't think I'll buy any more performance oriented mods.
On a brighter note, while I let the car run to pump up the lifters, it sounded very mean at idle. It sounded so good that when I get the new ones, I would actually think about installing them even after all this mess. I just need some time to cool off.
