Anyone local here run a cc306? I have a 224/232/112 in my car now that has a real small .490/.510 lift and I want something bigger, but I get 28mpg through an M6 on the highway and low 20's in town. I have a cc306 in my garage I was going to use in the 383 for my IROC. I was thinking of going to a 227/233/111 but I really want the power and lope of the 306 and I think the extra duration on the exhaust would help me since I have hooker s/c shorties.
I come home in a week and I'm tearing my head apart trying to figure this out! I'm gonna have Ion Soltan tune it for me in Jacksonville in a couple weeks on the dyno either way.
I'm upgrading to a vented opti, new springs, LT4 chain and roller rockers so I'll be down there either way.
What would you do?

The cc306 is a huge bitch. The XE 227/233 is nothing to sneeze at either but both cams are going to be choked out by those shorties. As far as the lope, my 227/233 lopes pretty damn hard because of the 111LSA. The 11LSA also brings the powerband lower into the RPMs yet still makes constant power to 6200-6400 RPMs. Also, why are you changing your cam if you already have a custom grind in there?

It's not a custom. It's an SLP cam for modified LT1 and TPI engines. It's their 51010 cam...but they dont list the numbers on their website and I bought it from someone who went bigger before installing it. They told me the lift numbers were identical to the XE 224/230, but it turns out it's not.
I'm sure my mileage wont take that much of a hit with the 227/233/111 but I have to question the cc306. I can afford to loose a little...as long as I'm making 23/24 mpg highway I dont care.
You confused me. Doesn't the 111 LSA make the thing idle harder, and move the powerband up?

The 111LSA moves the powerband down yet still makes good power on the top end. In general, the lower LSA starts to make power earlier than a higher LSA cam. The cc306 is a huge top end cam. Not to say that its gonna make you lose power down low, you will just see a pretty aggressive curve on the dyno.
Oh yea, and the 111LSA makes the the idle a good bit choppier than say a 114LSA cam but if you are comparing it against a cam like the cc306 which I believe is on a 112LSA, you wont be able to tell much of a difference. Mark(93zm6tally) is running the GM847 which is on a 112LSA and it lopes pretty good. The lope also has a lot to do with the exhaust you are running as well. Once you get back into town, maybe you can make it out to some of the meets and you can hear my car and maybe even compare it to Mark's if he ever decides to grace us with his presence.

The narrower the LSA, the more overlap potential hence more lope. Tighter LSA is more peaky

Lose the LT4 chain, pick up an electric water pump, and get a SBC double roller (cloyes). Will end up costing the same because the LT4 is stupidly overpriced, will gain HP with the electric pump, and will be stronger with the double roller. Just my $.02

I just replaced the pump with a new one not too long ago, and the LT4 chain I have is the extreme duty chain, not the standard single roller one. I figured I'd run that until this motor gets tired, then I'd go with an electric water pump on the replacement 383. I probably would have done it already, I guess I'm just afraid of the electric pump just crapping out in the middle of nowhere.
Bought the chain set new for $150 shipped, can't complain too much
Hey bo, where is that vid clip of you car idling with that cam? I'm kind of wondering what it sounds like...

Exactly why I suggested not to buy that chain. $150 is a rip when a hardened double roller sells for $50.

yeah, you have a point. I could have gotten a few more HP out of it by not driving the water pump too. I'll have to do that when I drop in it's replacement 383 sometime next year.
I guess you run one? What kind of power did it give you?
I always have wondered why those chains are like $250 new...

I didnt dyno the difference. OThers have, its around 7-10hp at peak, average gain's around 5rwhp.

I've been running the double roller setup with an electric pump for about 6 mos now. Car runs plenty cool so far without problems. You do have to clearance the timing chain cover with a grinder for clearance though. I just coated my chain with grease and used the "marks" to determine where the clearancing needed to be done.
For the price of Extreme Duty you can get an Electric Pump and a double roller. Just keep an eye on your temp guage, I don't know anyone who drives a performance car that doesn't do that anyways. Also gets you out of ever having to worry about putting the major PITA WP seal in ever again. Covered the whole with a freeze plug from Autozone and forgot about it.
