Finals against Andy in the black gt (notice my mph has higher, in fear of spinning. I wasn't launching as hard as on friday. Or this would of been in the 13.teens no question.)

Kinda makes one want to give up. Reminds you that no matter how fast your car is, there is always someone that will beat you w/ less due to being a better driver!

For the first time, the Superchips Street Stang Class had a pretty full field. Several of the front runners have figured out how to launch the DOT tires and get their Mustangs down the track. Tony Whetstone with his 2002 GT had the low qualifying ET with a 13.21 and Andy Vassilatos with the top speed of 103.25. In the finals, Tony beat Andy with a 13.275 @ 103.17 over Andy's losing 13.362 @ 104.32. The experiment of allowing the Mustang Bullitt's and the '96-'98 Cobra's in to the field didn't prove much as we only had one of each and the GT's had 'em covered. Tony's Mustang was a new 4.6L 2-valve and Andy was driving a 1990 Mustang 5.0L. Close competition all the way, just what was originally predicted for this class.

Tony that is truly some excellent driving. I just have two questions for you. What street tires were you running? What exactly was/is your launch technique? RPM? Rate of engaging the clutch??? Thanks

Still using the same tires I've been using for a while now. The Nitto NT-555 245-45-17s. Exact launch technique...hmm. I hold the RPMs @ 4500 and just ride the clutch out. After a few passes doing this, u get to where u can just about tell if the tires are about to spin. You kinda feel it. So you just find the happy medium between bog and spin and keep the rev's up.

do you try to get a little wheelspin in there to keep the RPM's up, or do you try to not spin at all?
I try not to spin at all.

Thanks Tony! I will have to try 4500rpms. Recentlyl I have been launching at 4000rpms and getting consistent 2.0 60' while not spining. Hopefully the extra 500rpms will be good for at least another tenth.

Hey Tony, are you still on the factory clutch? How much life can you get out of a clutch using that technique anytime you race even on the street?

Yes, I'm still runnin the factory clutch in the in the car. It has about 27,500 miles on it so far. I've been running it like this for about a year now and 6000 miles at least. No probs so far "knock on wood"
