The Florida Gators have fired third-year football coach Ron Zook and his staff, ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit reported Monday.

Ron Zook and the Gators fell to 4-3 on Saturday.

Athletic director Jeremy Foley will meet with members of the team this afternoon and then announce that Zook and his staff will coach the team for the remainder of the season, Herbstreit reported.

The firing comes on the heels of the Gators' 38-31 loss Saturday to Mississippi State, the worst team in the SEC.

The Gators are 4-3 this season, 20-13 overall under Zook.

His teams haven't had the swagger of those under his predecessor Steve Spurrier, who lost only six home games in 12 years and won a national championship.

When asked about his future Sunday, Zook focused on next Saturday.

"I just have to worry about this next game right now," Zook said. "That's all I have any control over."

Wouldn't that make the Gators now the worst team in the SEC.

My friend who goes to Gainesville was in town for the weekend and she told me that Zook was getting fired and I asked her if she thought they would hire spurrier back and she said that it was rumored that he would be but she was praying he wasn't.

I would be shocked if Spurrier comes back. His ego is too big. If he returned to UF, that would be like him admitting that he failed in the NFL. I don't think it will happen.

he wants to coach...and what job looks better than his alma mater needing a rebuild(which he loves). he knows he's not an NFL coach, and has gobs of talent already in place at UF. he may have an ego but he aint stupid enough to pass it up, after all may be his last chance.

He's a great college coach coaching kids with learning to do. He's an asshole, but he's a great coach, there's no denying that. His style didn't do well in the NFL because the players there are pros and think they already know everything.

gotta be a subscriber...

Per Orlando Sentinel:

"I'll cross that bridge if it comes to that," Spurrier told the Sentinel. "One thing I've tried to do all this year is not be lingering around acting like I'm waiting for another guy's job. I don't believe that's the right way to do it. But now that he (Zook) doesn't have a job, I guess there will be some discussions. We'll see what happens."

damn, he was my favorite UF coach ever!!
I hope Spurrier comes back, that will get this rivalry going again. I hate the cry baby, visor throwing cocksucker as much as the next guy, but he is damn sure fun to watch on the sidelines.

Spurrier left his team a few years ago to go for what he thought was something bigger and better. Now he knows he not cut out for it so he's considering going back to Florida. If I was in charge at UF I would make him beg.

While he is a great coach, I dont' see why Steve would even want to come back? If he was in his right mind, he wouldn't. All he talked about when he was leaving was how he didn't like all the restrictions the college ranks have verus the NFL and it was time for something else.

I'm sure Florida would love to get him as he's just as big and A-hole as most Florida fans are. They were made for each other but I think the game has changed since his last collage game. I say Shanahand or however you spell his name will be the new coach. I also have heard the the Louisville coach is also a possiblity.

you're kidding right? Foley is one main reason spurrier left...he didnt back him on a few key public issues back then and believe me he still knows it...if Foley knows what good for him he's already begged for steve's return...and thrown the bank at him.

i heard the phrase "20 Million" but nothing as to how long

i wonder what JD thinks about all this...he almost hates UF as much as UM...almost

Florida is in no position to force someone to beg.
