View Full Version : What should I do?
Well here is my problem. As you all know Ive been looking into getting a daily driver. Only problem is I just cant see myself driving anything other than a stang. Here is a little background info. I have enough right now to pay off the cobra. Im also saving money to pay off my CC debt so I can go back to school. This is why parting out the 89 is so vital. I need the extra cash to pay off some debt.
So I could go ahead and spend 3500 or whatever right now on another fox, but I would still have my car loan and CC debt. This wouldnt be too bad once the chassis is gone as well as some other parts.
Or I could go pay the cobra off, so I dont have to worry about it anymore. And go buy this 89 coupe 4-banger for 500 bucks. This wouldnt put me out too much money. He says it drives, but its not smooth *shrug* Maybe convert it?
Im thinking of going with the latter. It seems like the best plan of attack on the whole situation.

do you think you can go from a cobra to a 4 cylinder and be happy :?: :?: :?:

I say pay off the cobra and get the 4 banger stang. The conversion is not too hard and 302's are not hard to come by. I think you will hate the 4 banger in the stang. I rented one once and could not even get it to peel one tire around a corner. Gas mileage might be better.
Or better yet, a turbo build-up on the 2.3l banger.

Why not pend the $500 for the coupe, fix the 306, sell the GT body as a roller with the rear from the 4 cyl. and put the 306 into the coupe? All this and the Cobra is paid off... I dunno. I wish I had money.
I say pay the Cobra off and go from there. Debt sucks, and that'll be one less thing you have to worry about when you go back to school.

Get the banger, drop in your 306 converted to carb to keep cost down.

pretty much what Jon said.
which has the higher interest rate? the cobra or the cc debt???
pay that one off first and go from there.
Well the plan is to get rid of all my debt come august. Im not sure if Im going to make it, but hopefully Ill get close. I think Im gonna go with the 4cyl coupe. It might be slow, but if it drives like he said it does then Ill be happy. I guess I could slowly get everything Im missing over the next 2 months and hopefully drop the 306 (rebuilt) in with stock parts, or maybe even go carb.
If I go carb I gotta get a lower intake, carb, and fuel pump and line.
If I go FI Im gonna need V8 fuel lines, an 8.8, cluster, stock headers or unequal length headers.
Either way I go, it looks like Im gonna have to go ahead and rebuild the 306, or at least replace the #4 piston. Im also gonna have to get one of these sets of heads checked out and freshened up.

i'm not fully comprehending what you're trying to do.
you're talking about paying off debt, and talking about building up a 306.......for your GT?
what exactly is your goal? to have the cobra, the gt, AND a 4cyl daily driver? :?:
edit- n/m. i see now. you wanna eventually build up that 4cyl. That's defeating the whole purpose of the safe "dail driver" though. you're already talking about forced induction too!
The 4 banger I would want to get me by as long as I needed it to. As for putting the V8 in it. It would be mainly stock. I figure I have the parts here, might as well if I get the time and have the money. I dont why a fresh 302 wouldnt be reliable?
My GT is supposed to be sold as just a rolling chassis without any of the suspension upgrades it has on it. So Im making out pretty good on it. Im supposed to deliver it sometime in the next few weeks.
So Ill have a T5, 302 and internals, heads, intake, and everything else, except the few things missing I mentioned above to put into the car. So it wouldnt really cost too much to put everything in there. If it came down to paying off the rest of my debt or having the coupe with a V8 in it, I would leave it a 4 cyl.
OK, you know that you're selling the GT, paying off the Cobra, and then getting a 4 cyl. Sounds like you're down to the details, and you already have most of those figured out.
Even if you have to leave it as a 4 cyl for as long as it takes to finish school, it'd keep the miles off the Cobra and you still have the Cobra for feeding the need for speed until you're done with your classes. Sure it'd be great to have the V8 in the coupe. Just wait and do it when you have the time and the money. You don't even have to wait until you graduate- just save a little here and there and get the necessary parts one by one until you have them all. Then you can take a week or two and convert it over to V8, driving the Cobra while you're doing it.
Well here is whats up with the coupe. Its white. He said the paint is in OK condition except that the roof is kinda faded or something. He said it must have been under a tree. Im not really sure if its bad or not, and he cant send me pics. I guess Ill just hope its not too bad. He said there isnt any body damage.
As for the motor. He said it takes a while to get up to speed. As if its kinda of slugish or something. Im hoping this might be something simple. He said the exhaust is cutoff before the catalytic converter by the previous owner so its loud. The rest of the exhaust is still there so I guess it just needs to be welded back together. Last thing he mentioned was that the headlight switch is just hanging there which is a simple fix.
When I go to school I wont be driving the cobra. The plan is to get a cheap car to put the bare minimum insurance on and take insurance off the cobra while I go to school. I cant afford to have the cobra insured, so its gonna be sleeping in the garage for a little while. :(

If you do take the insurance off the Cobra, if you wanted, you could have it in the garage with the wheels off on jackstands if you ever go out of town or anything. If its in the garage and on stands, it falls under your homeowners insurance. Just in case, ya know? Playing it safe.
