Thinking about dropping my soon to be "old" block into an S-10 for my son. Need to buy a suitable S-10 to put it into. Would love to talk with you guys that have done this or similar. I don't have a transmission yet, but I'm thinking auto and will probably convert the LT1 to a carburated set up. Anyways if you have experience in this are I'd like to talk with you.

i have never done it but the main 2 issues are cooling and motor mounts.
You will need to go with a bigger radiator to handle the larger engine and move the motor mounts.
That is all im aware of...the small details
(isnt there a guy here with a strocker in an S10?)

I helped a buddy of mine out of one. He did it back when you had to fabricate shit yourself, but now they sell complete swap kits that come with a radiator big enough for a sbc, a set of motor mounts, and swap headers. It can be a PITA to do but it's all possible. I had to drop my engine and tranny in seperately, couldn't get the angle necessary to drop it in as a unit.

it would void it only if you broke something :duhidea:
Ive heard of several instances where the dealer refused to cover something in the warranty just cause a truck has a body lift and/or suspension lift.
Even if neither caused the problem. If they are going to be assholes about it then it doesnt matter whether it technically voids it or not.
..as for putting the motor/tranny in. It might be more effort than it is worth but you could always take the entire front suspension off and drop the truck down on top of the tranny/engine. ..or just put them in seperately

Yes, they cannot void the warranty unless they can tie the modification you did to it directly to the problem. However, it will void the warranty on the parts that it replaces.

I'm not sure about the modifications you're going to be doing to the motor mounts and such. But, if you're going with an automatic tranny, I'd suggest getting a TH400 and have a tranny shop beef it up a little (or a lot, depending on what you're going for). Either that or maybe find a used GM 4L80E automatic if it'll fit. What are you going for as far as power? Are you wanting it to be around 300-350hp range or are you shooting for something higher?

I really don't want too much power. Basically a stock heads and cam LT1 with a carb. My 17 year old kid will be driving this, I don't want it to be too radical. That much HP in a S10 would probably be more than he needs as it is.
As much of a PITA as he is, I'd still like to see him live a nice long life. 8)

Yeah, TH400 sounds great for that application. And from what I hear, they're so easy and inexpensive to be made strong.

I have a buddy of mine who is in the process of putting a carbed 350 into an 88 s10. He is running the stock 700r4, but I would go with the turbo 350. They can be had for around 500 bucks and will take a lot of shit. He has the engine in, but is still hooking everything up to get it running. They do make kits for motor mounts and such and even special headers. He lives in tallahasse, and I'm sure he'd be willing to give you some resources for parts and such. PM me if you want his number...

a stock T400 can handle 450 hp. It wont live as long but it will still handle the power.
If you are converting to carb then a 4L80E wont be a good idea cause it is computer controlled.
A 700R4 is not as strong as the T400 but it has the advantage of the the .75 OD and a deep first gear. Very good for highway and stop and go traffic.
You can build up the 700R4's for the power range you are talking about.

i can help you wherever you need it. if you want any kind of gas milage though, i'd stick to the fi over the carbed. i know you already know this but i thought i'd just throw it out there.

Mark, I seem to have a knack for finding good deals in the f-body world. I can keep an eye open for you as well if youd like to save yourself the headache of the swap in the truck.

th400 = overkill. 700r4 will do fine, with 300-350hp it isnt gonna be a drag truck or anything, justa lil hot street truck. as for the mounts, im sure brian see's a lot on s-10forum about the mounts, etc...but i think it should use the same mounts. it'll bolt right up to a 88-98 fullsize truck
mark, theres a cheap s-10 in the kmart/publix parking lot across from the mall with a for sale sign on it. its the generation prior to brians with teh square composite headlights. it wont be there long as kmart likes to bitch about these things. if you choose a different route i have a friend with an s-10 looking for a 350 if you decide to sell your motor, i can let him know.

305 with a TH350 with a 6" tailshaft is the easiest swap. Some sites to consider are:
www.v8s10.org (Kickass site, I'm registered on there with this name)
www.s10v8.com for some parts
www.jagsthatrun.com
And the list goes on. If the truck your looking for is a 2.8, its pretty straight forward. The V8 mounts actually mount to the 2.8 frame mounts. For cooling you should buy a genuine AC Delco aluminum vette radiator. It's about 180 bucks from s10v8.com or jagsthatrun.com
LT1 with a th350 is the way I would go. If your looking to keep the LT1 injected, check out www.EFIConnection.com - the guy builds KICKASS custom harnesses that will plug directly into the factory computer. You can see some of his work at www.S10WildSide.com and v8s10.org as well. Here is a picture of one of his custom harnesses:
http://www.s10wildside.com/ramjet/rjharness02.jpg
Literally plug and play.
For headers I would recommend Hedman shortie's. The reason you need headers is because of the steering column. Here's an example of what I'm explaining:
http://www.v8s10.org/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=745
First gen would be the easiest for your first v8 s10 project, as the speedo is mechanical, and other little differences.
If your looking for a truck, money talks. My truck is 100% stock, but it has (ALOT of) exterior mods, both installed and waiting to be. I'm not sure what he likes, but what person doesn't like their ride to look good? If your remotely interested, I can give you more information on the truck. Also thought I would add that my dad is a mechanic, so it's in excellent shape.
If you have anymore swap questions feel free to send a PM my way :tu:

While the extra drag and resistance created by the transfer case, extra diff and cvs...A fully built V8 making nice numbers in a 4wd S10 will take almost any 2wd S10...While you cant drive in 4wd on the street obviously because theres no slip compensation for wheel speed diffs when turning...In a straight line the extra traction from all 4s going and weight of the front will help your times.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Plans have changed. Just bought a 96 Z28 M6. I know a guy who really knows how to work on these, (mostly from making every dumb mistake in the book). My kid will like me for a week or two, then I'm sure it's back to "hating the Old Man".
