My wife is taking online courses @ FSU and something happened to our pc at home b/c it works fine at her work, etc. When she tries to add a new thread on her discussion board, the message box does not show up. The subject box works fine, as does the rest of the site, and our pc works fine also. Could there be a setting that got switched? Anyone ever experience this?
TIA,
Jeremy

O.K. I called and talked to a tech guy at fsu and he had me d/l & instal firefox and it works fine using this browser. Should I just use this from now on or should I try and fix IE? This one looks funny. :p .

Thats complete personal preferance, and this is about to become a firefox vs ie

I have norton internet security running on my computer, with settings that took a while to setup, but now that it is, I love IE and despise firefox

if your like ff, keep it, if you dont, fix ie

If you have service pack 2 installed it may be blocking either the popup screen required for the discussion board or possibly some active x content. When you click on the link is there are bar that appears below the address bar saying something about "Click here to allow...."?

No. When you click "Add New Thread", it doesn't open a 2nd window, same as here. So far, everyone @ the FSU tech support place are stumped, they've never heard of this problem before. Also, I can tab down to the "mini" message box and type stuff, then click preview post and what I typed shows up on the preview, but you can't see it as you type it since the message box is so small. I've done all I know how to do, even restored and reset all settings to default and no luck. Oh well, maybe it will magically fix itself,lol.

Have you tried clearing your cache? Sounds like you might've but it is good to confirm.

Yeah, I deleted all cookies, temporary internet files(and offline content) and cleared history. Nothing has worked. :shrug:

It's possible that it is a "malfunctiong" piece of adware/spyware. Get Microsoft's beta AntiSpyware (it will be free when it goes live also).

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=321cd7a2-6a57-4c57-a8bd-dbf62eda9671&displaylang=en

Let it update and then run a full scan of you PC.

You could also add the site to the "trusted" zone. If the problem is security related, that'll take care of it.

We are going to get this damned problem solved...I will not let IE/Blackboard beat me!

Try installing the latest Java - could be something got funky in IE related to Java settings/files.

Open this link in IE:
http://www.java.com/en/download

Ok, got another thing for you to try:

"Many users have reported slowness with the Discussion Board. One possible cause of this for users of Internet Explorer on Windows might be the WYSIWYG Text Box Editor. You can use the simpler and faster loading text editor by going to Tools > Personal Information > Set Text Box Editor Options, choosing the "Disable" option and clicking "Submit." This will disable this option for your account in all courses. Some courses may not contain the "Personal Information" option under "Tools." "

Also, do the following:

" To enable JavaScript support in Internet Explorer 5.x for Windows, use these steps:

* Select the Tools menu.
* Choose Internet Options.
* Click on the Advanced tab.
* Make sure the Java console enabled, Java logging enabled and Java JIT compiler enabled boxes are checked.
* Select OK.
* Select OK again.

Her course doesn't have this.

Did it. Restarted. Nothing. You're not billing me for this, are you? :p

I am 85% certain that the default IE WYSIWYG editor for Blackboard is the problem. Whenever you use a different browser such as Firefox or Netscape, you are actually using the alternate (older) editor. They are planning to apply a few "security" patches to Blackboard on the 7th, perhaps they will cure this incompatibility then?
