My youngest (14) is interested in taking classes to boost his discipline and self confidencce. We talked to an instructor at Emory Morris Taekwondo last night and it looks pretty good but before I sign us up for their 3 year black belt program does anyone have a recommendation/experience with local schools?

My wife went to Gallop's for a while. She liked it way better than Emory Morris's place because it wasn't so commercialized. Master Gallop is a bad, bad man... If your kid wants to improve his discipline, I think he'd certainly find it there.

I asked a co-worker about this for you, since she is into this stuff. Here is her reply

ATA ( Emory Morris ) is a good school in regards to tkd material that you learn. You also learn self defenses.

I assume you talked to Mr. Heller last night.

ITA is also a good school to go to and is cheaper and the contract isn’t for so long.

I at least know ITA is good for kids. Your son being 14 may like ATA better.

I would only warn you that it is very expensive. Most expensive in town ( I didn’t know that when I signed up).

You have to pay to breathe, so just be aware of that. Most schools are somewhat like that, however with the ATA base tuition being $120.00 (I think), it gets costly.

I guess if you sign up for the black belt program you won’t have to buy the weapons, however your son will want to do that once he gets started. The Master club does the weapons. I suspect you may want to upgrade to Master club after a few months.

My suggestion is that you try ITA before you sign on with ATA.

ATA is a good school, but no sense paying extra money if you don’t have to.

Most schools have some sort of trial period. I highly recommend you try both because a 3 yr contract lasts for just that long, and if you become unhappy or surprised, then they are long years.

Either way, you will enjoy tkd,

Best of Luck,

Michele Vause

I did emory morris up until purple belt. Very disciplined and well organized. I loved it but just got to damn expensive. To get a black belt was like 1500 bux. Hope he has fun.
