View Full Version : My car moved, then stopped.

Grenaded the Eaton posi tonight in Valdosta. When I say grenaded, imagine the worst outcome you can think of, then multiply it exponentially. First pass, launched, car popped out of gear, coasted down the track trying out the tranny to a 29 @ 41. Everything seemed fine, looked under the car, no damage, no leaks. There was a chirping noise that went away when I applied the brakes, figured the pads were about gone.
Go back to the line, do a nice burnout, stage, mat the pedal, launch, boom. I thought at first the driveshaft had snapped somewhere behind the loop with all the racket it made. Guy runs up to push the car, says I'm leaking. Rear end cover is cracked leaving a gaping hole for all the oil to poor out onto the track. Chase then comes up to me while they're pushing the car off the track and says, "What, you trying to keep me from racing?" or something to that effect. His punishment has been discussed and will be carried out beginning tomorrow and extending to a time I feel is appropriate.
Push the car back to teh pits, jack it up and see the crack. Drain the small amount of oil left in the rearend and proceed to pull the cover off. As soon as I pulled it off a little bit, pieces started falling out. Just about the whole thing is disintegrated. Gears are chewed up bad. Axles may have survived, the c-clips were still on them, we'll have to see when everything comes apart.
Going to borrow a trailor tomorrow morning and go get the car.
Now for the pics.

Time for a spool!
That would also involve c-clip eliminators, adding to the cost and downtime. I'll most likely go with a 31 spline truck posi and new gears.

Lol @ the idiot ford truck driver.
That sucks greg. I feel bad for my poor rear which is 1.3 inches smaller. Thankfully I can make up for that in other places. Need any help with it, give me a holler.
So is the tranny AND the rear fucked up?

Transmission should be ok. After the first attempt, I had no problems rowing through the gears. I think the problems before were just because it was cold. We're also tossing around the idea that tire shake may have popped it out of gear as well as weakening the posi on the launch. Tony said the tires spun pretty good on the first attempt. Apparently they hooked real good on the second one.

So your problems at FFW and now you think are stemming from the bad rear and tire shake?
Greg Kulbick
03-19-2005, 12:46 AM
No, the problems in Orlando were most likely due to the tranny being too cold. When it was warm, it worked fine. We're pretty sure the hit and tire shake tonight are what caused it to pop out of gear on the first attempt.

Why would it being cold make it pop out of gear?

damn dude that sucks ......... are the newer rears not good as the old ones?
i know my skoobie sometimes on a real cold morning wont even go into second gear or third. go bout2-3 miles down the road and all is good.

It popped pretty quick, so I vote it was going on the run it popped out of gear, of course you were IN the car so you could tell how violent it was. And it was like i couldnt stop myself, it just seems people always break in front of me (or come close to it). I'm glad to see you decided on a posi, because Brett and I figured that the spool was a bit of overkill for your daily driver. I know that is about to be a hunk of money though, and that it shouldn't have broken in the first place, so I feel for ya! I had that feeling when the shop called and said that I spun 5 main bearings and my crank was galled beyond repair (for the third time).

I was sad to see this as you would have run a great time with how well that launch hooked. It made one hell of a poping noise, i heard it from the grandstand. I hope nothing else is wrong.

As Willis said, I was up on the top of the grand stands snapping pics and I heard it. It was not pretty. Hopefully you can get it back together ASAP and if you need a hand or ride or anything let me know.
Also, here is a pic of some of the metal shavings inside the cover and the nice crack in the bastard:

No no. Pay attention Chris. In Orlando it was cold and wouldnt go IN to gear. Last night when the hit shocked the tires and they shook, violently I might add, that's probably what popped it OUT of gear. The operating temperature of the tranny had nothing to do with last night and nowhere in any of my posts did I make that indication. Should I draw pictures as well?

A lot of cars dont like going into gear when fluid is cold, I remember my old 1st gen Eclipse gsx hated cold weather shifts. Anyone know the anwser? Is it the fluid?

Even with c-clip eliminators wouldnt a spool still be alot less than a new posi?
IF i was in that situation contact reider for a detroit and some new strange gears
..and btw- sorry to hear about your car
With C-clip elmins on a newer stang, you loose ABS. Not a bad thing in a full race car, but on a daily driver why screw it up. Also c-clip elmins have been known to leak, also not a good thing on a DD.
And actually a Ford 31 spline Trac-loc is $189 at GEFracing and a spool is also $189. So the spool would cost more.

$189 for a spool!?!? weld that bitch up!
i didnt know that about loosing the ABS..

Are you gonna at least re-pack the clutches in the new alternating method to get more grip?
No need to restack a new Trac-loc.

Dude I can totally sympathise with u but mine let go in the middle of a turn on Tennessee ST ..Luckly I had 4wd to drag it off. But mine was a formula.
4000LB Ranger with a locker 8.8 + 7000 pound Mercedees on 44 inch tractor tires + snatch rope x 3 pulls sideways (because it wouldnt turn)=

In my car, the tranny doesn't shift as well when its cold(always right now, its in the 30's at night) and when it hasn't warmed up its a nightmare to shift. All of the manual cars that I've driven have had issues in the cold with shifting properly and most of them were new. Just my $.02. By the way, hope you get it back together soon Greg, that just sucks majorly.
