so im on my way to miami and im at about the suwanne/madison line and i start to hear a faint tapping. at about lake city its loud as fuck so i pull over. it is rpm dependent and doesnt sound hollow like rod or main bearing knock. oil pressure is fine.

i let the car sit for about 5-10 minutes. start it back up and its still there. but about a minute later it goes away. than other 10-15 minutes later it comes back.

so im getting pissed and i pull over again to smoke a cigarette. when i start it back up same thing, still there then gone then back. so i just drive back to tallahassee from lake city/gainesville with the bitch tapping away the whole time

get back to tally and as im driving down tharpe it fades and is almost completely gone, but can hear it slightly.

i was thinking lifters, so i put half a can of seafoam in the oil and the other half in the intake to clean all the shit out of the intake and oil passages and shit, then im gonna change the oil and put some of that lucas oil stabilizer in it and hope that takes care of it. with how ford crammed everything together in there in one big pile of shit i really dont want to pull anything apart but i may have to

any ideas????

thanks???

If it is an overhead cam motor then it is the timing chain tensioner is bad. Ford had a BIG problem with those. Check that out and let me know.

all you have to take off is the upper intake to get to those valve covers off. takes most people a couple minutes, so you could probably get it in 30 secs. :D

sounds like its gonna suck tracking it down, good luck man.

possibly problem #1 found:

checked oil dipstick multiple times since i got it, all say full. checked when knocking = full

drained oil after seafoam, 2.5 maybe 3 quarts outta 5. hmmmm

you should've given me a call, so you wouldn't have had to drive back to tally. Since I'm in G-ville now. Sounds like you found the root of the problem. Hopefully it didn't fuck anything up too bad.

well just did a 20 mile and no tapping after seafoam, oil change, and a quart of that lucas stabilizer shit.

however, it didnt start doing it til i was 70-80 miles outside tallahassee anyways so. . . .

theres no way i can be this lucky

Possibly a lifter bled down then from low oil in crankcase. Or a rocker wasnt getting enough oil.
