... I think I may have stumbled across my trademark. The uncanny ability to destroy 4L60E's with incredible ease. Yes, 4L60E number 3 gave in under the incredible power of the 14 second truck last night :wtf:. Yes, the transmission that I "couldn't break" lasted 11 days. It was fine yesterday, and following Jared, I had to be extra easy on it because he drives like a 90 year old woman. So Monday I get to pay a visit to Tony Bigot and see what the problem is and why these transmissions can't handle ~265 whp in a 4000lb truck . So on to tranny number 4 and maybe better luck .

Oh, this one should be free. He said that the warranty didn't apply if I break it "hot rodding around." So we'll see what he has to say about that tomorrow. I get on it a good bit, but I've been kinder to this transmission than either of the other two. No burnouts, no runs down the track, heck only one race from a dead stop, and like 2 from a roll. And that was on Wednesday. I was good to it the first week, no abuse at all. If he tries to put this on me I'll be EXTREMELY upset.

You need Redline clutches and kevlar bands.

GM Performance Parts crate 4l65e. I said it in the last thread. 3 year 36k warranty unconditional.

I'll do that as soon as the warranty runs out and this one breaks again.

And Brett... old dude and weird "redline and kevlar" guy were wrong. Alto makes Red Eagle clutches, and Redline makes oil . But when I talk to Tony tomorrow I am gonna seeif he'll do that this time. The full rebuild kit with the clutches and all that TCI puts in their 700+hp trannies is $500, and if he just "fixes it" most likely i will be back in there in another 2 weeks and it'd probably save him money to do it with the parts I want. If he insists on rebuilding it just the way it was though, and I can't talk him into it, I'll be willing to order the parts myself and just have him assemble it. But of course I would rather not pay for anything. More importantly I want to know what is killing them!! I don't care how poor the parts are in a transmission, it should last more than 2 weeks behind a motor with power equivalent to an LT1 (or maybe a bolt-on LT1). Ah, the more I think about it, the madder I get!!

yeah i dont know how quick your eating these trannies up but sound to me it isnt that much your fault ....i had a c4 built one time and it broke like tw o times the last time i requsted that the tranny shop would take it to NationWide the guy did so i was happy...... never had a problem again. well other thant the reverse manual ArtCarr vlv body twisting a few inputsafts from shifting so hard ...higher stall took care of that... once again NationWide trans Carlton ....he is your tranny/s friend.

You need more than that trust me. The only reason mine broke was be cause I drove it home when the TCI convertor took a shit, and that only messed up the high gear cluch pack. I spec'd mine out to handle 650+ horse. Shifts like a dream. I going to blue print a spare (power coat case on this one), not that I think I'll need it.

Hate to hear about the trans man. Good luck on the gettin it fixed part.

Well he said that he thinks its the computer's fault, not making enough pressure and causeing it to chew up the 3/4 gear clutches. So everything is golden as far as the getting it fixed free part is concerned. So maybe he'll have it figured out soon.

I know. It was a joke. When Chase and I were at a local tranny shop, the guy there basically talked about Redline clutches and kevlar bands for a half hour. He used the phrase "Redline clutches and kevlar bands" roughly 50 times.

im not much of a transmission expert, but are you sure your getting good flow through your transmission cooler? Heat will kill a tranny real quick.......Just a thought.

Sure, blame the computer... sounds like it's time to find a better trans shop . Good thing is youve got your warranty.

Oh you want some $5000 header boy??

And Chris, you have a better idea as to how a 270 hp motor can kill 2 totally different transmissions in under 3 months?

hey chase I have a built up 700r4 and if you are going to get another gm tranny at least get a T56 or 4L85E they have been know to take an assload

WC T5 isnt all that great T56 is where the money is at

SloNLo_350
05-17-2005, 10:59 AM
4L85 will suck gobs of power, and there is no need for it, and I can't use a T56. If I ever got a 6-speed it would have to be a Richmond (to clear my center console). Maybe a TKO too, dependong on where the midshifter adapter puts the shifter. But that is way too much money to be slower so I will never do it.

Pressure Solenoid failed. A brand new one. But, what can ya do . He asked me what its set to shift at and I told him it was supposed to be 5500, but I don't really know for sure, and he said that pushing it past 6000 could do it, although I don't really see how. But I'll hook up the laptop later and see where its shifting just out of curiousity. But he said he may have it done this afternoon.

Being built wrong, out of spec, wrong tolerances, clearances, cleanliness, you name it. Built properly, it should need no more line pressure then stock for complete functionality, its not like certain parts need more or less. Any increase in said line pressure should also be done mechanically, not electronically. They should also have tested the line pressure when it was installed, it takes 3 minutes to do so, two fittings.

Note: I hope your replacing the converter, or they're paying to have it rebuilt. Tranny goes FUBAR, all that shit ends up inside the converter.

Edit: The pressure solenoid shouldnt ever go if set up correctly. Ever. Especially in a built transmission. The GM one is rather robust, but the two piece GM spring design isnt. At any rate, they turn almost 6,000 in stock fbodies, and mine turned 7000 with no issues. RPMs kill the front planetaries and if the pressure spring fails, it CAN starve the trans at high rpms, but again, aside from a factory transmission, that should never be an issue.

Edit #2, you gonna get a 6k+ tach for that beast? Escalade cluster go past 5000 rpms?

I have one... and it doesn't work. Well not an E$calade one but Brandon's old cluster, and the needle points in the same direction as it did with my cluster... so "6000rpm" is really 5000. I don't know how I am gonna remedy that one. '95 trucks suck!

For the record...Shes an EX...not gf, and biggest mistake of my life thank you very much!!!

Sorry to hear about the trouble. Guess we all have our car troubles, some are just more expensive. Bo's was relatively cheap...until you look at the grand total, mine is about $400 every year, and yours is I cant even imagine.

Well just think, a few more trannys broken and then you might be in the range of money spent that Ryan has spent on tickets lol
