This would be my first handgun. Intended use is your standard
self-protection / firing range / guns are cool use.
Anyone want to give a newbie rundown?

what are you looking for? Do you want to carry it on you? Just something to shoot? Home defense?

To start out with, I'm probably looking at something small enough to carry.
Use would be all of the above, home defense, something to shoot
at the range, etc. A compromise gun, if you will, since I'm only looking
at my first handgun.

anything like a smaller Sig Saur, HK UPS compact, not a big fan of glocks (just the ergonomics). I will be carrying a Sig 239, my 1911 is just WAY to freaking big to carry.
Glock / HK / Sig. Sigs are heavier due to all-metal construction, Glocks and HKs have polymer frames. I love Glock.

What's a good all around caliber for a new guy? 9mm?
9mm is good... ammo is cheap to practice with. Depending on the brand / model you choose, you can get preban high-capacity magazines... due to the size, 9mm has the highest capacity of the 3 major calibers.
9mm is also pretty easy to shoot, recoil isn't bad, and it's accurate. Definitely as good a caliber as any to start with.
My boss at the Dept of Ag, has a gun store over on Capital Circle. He can probably get you a good deal on one. I'll get the name of his store later today.

What he said. I shot my USP .40 in competition for a year and it never jammed or had any other problems.

beretta 9mm. cant beat a 15 bullet mag.
Except that the similarly-sized Glock (G17) has a 17 round mag. The compact (G19) maxes out at 15.

.45 all the way. I have all .45's (7) and only 2 9mm. I prefer the stopping power myself.:) I collect handguns or I should say I did in the past before the cars came along. Below are some of the ones in house: Sig P220,SW645,SW4506,Beretta Couger 9mm, Glock92F, Glock 9mm special edition, Colt Diamondback
"Stopping power." lol.
This is an argument gone over ocuntless times on every single gun board in existence, we don't need to get into it here.
Double-tap COM, 1 in the head... they won't know the difference between a 9mm or a .45
