(CNN) -- A 14-year-old girl died Saturday in a shark attack while swimming in the Gulf of Mexico, authorities said.
The teenager was dragged underwater by the shark at about 11:15 a.m. in front of a campground near the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, near Destin, Florida, according to the South Walton Fire District.
She lost a leg in the attack and died afterward, district official John Fitch said.
At the time of the attack, the girl and a 14-year-old friend were swimming and using "boogie boards" about 200 to 250 yards offshore, said Lt. Frank Owens of the Walton County Sheriff's office.
The friend saw the attack and her friend being dragged under, he said.
"For a regular swimmer, she was pretty far out," Capt. Danny Glidewell of the sheriff's office told CNN.
Usually, only surfers go that far out in the water, he said.
Once swimmers pass the first sandbar, or dropoff, "you will experience more sightings of sharks," he said, although this is the area's first shark attack.
Although shark sightings are not uncommon along the coast, Owens said, no one had seen a shark in the area Saturday before the attack. Green flags indicated calm surf, Glidewell said.
Beaches in southern Walton County were closed after the attack and will remain closed for at least the rest of the day, Owens told CNN.
Authorities anticipate opening the beaches Sunday, Glidewell said, but a final decision has not been made.
Observers have not seen the shark since the incident, and it's believed to have left the area, Owens said.
Authorities do not know what kind of shark it was.
Fitch said the shark was about 11 feet long. Owens said he could not confirm that size, but noted that many species swim in the warm waters off the Florida coast.
The shark apparently was chasing bait fish in the water, Fitch said.

That's terrible.
250yds off shore is a LONG ways out there!!! I don't think a 14 year old on a boogie board should be out that far.

My mom told me about this earlier this afternoon. But I agree that someone should ahve had an eye on them and not let them go out so far. Plus once you go past the sand bar, you don't really wanna be there anyway, just cause its really dark and really deep. That is terrible though.

speaking of being that far out, one time in miami me and some friends where dolphin fishing in like 300-400 ft and we run across a bunch of boards floating in the water (dolphin heaven) so we stop and throw some live bait out. well i was hot as fuck and the water out there is so clear and clean i jump in to swim around and cool off, so im swimming around the boat for like 15 minutes and get back in. well we always have one rod on the bottom for grouper and what not so about five minutes after i get in the boat the bottom rod goes off pretty hard. so i grab it, lock down the drag (80# ln) and start cranking it in, about 3/4 way up the line rips out HARD and almost pulls me overboard. about 20 minutes later i bring up a 12-14ft mako.

daytona is packed this time of year and you would think that a shark would not come around alot of noise , fish won't bite when it's noisy

Damn Ryan I've been fishing in Florida a lot and never had the sack to jump in deep water like that, especially around weed lines. I've also done quite a bit of diving, but have never seen a really big shark. I've done the Duane in the keys and supposedly there's quite a few Big Bull sharks that frequent that wreck, but I've never seen them. I'm pretty sure that I could without seeing a 10 or 15 foot Bull with 100 feet of water between me and the boat.
