View Full Version : 2 damn bolts.

When me and Cary were putting my headers on, two of the factory exhaust manifold bolts broke off into the driver's side head. It wasn't our fault either. One of the bolts was actually laying on the frame and fell onto the carport as we were unbolting the exhaust and was rusted where the break was; indicating that the bolt had BEEN broken for a while. So, we put the headers on anyways and I drove it to Perry and got the exhaust welded back on and drove it for about a week. Started to notice a leak more and more. So now my truck sits in my parents garage here in Perry with basically the top half of the motor taken apart except for the passenger side cylinder head. The driver's side head is going to a machine shop tomorrow to get the bolts out. We'll spend about $120 in gaskets alone. And I have no clue how much the machine shop will charge. There's a lot of shit you have to take apart to get the damn heads off. All this because of two damn bolts.

So there are broken off bolts in the head still? If so, just get some easy outs and save the time and money and do it yourself. I broke a bolt off on Bryans old Yukon and a $12 set of easy outs fixed it.

He tried to drill it out with a left handed drill bit and the bit broke off in the head. That's why he decided to pull the heads.

There is nothing no worse than trying to drill out a drill bit

So why exactly didn't you get this fixed before you drove around for a week? Lets hope the flanges on the new headers aren't warped.

Nothing's warped and the head isn't pitted. The bolts that were broken off were the very front one and the very back one. The 4 middle bolts were fine. I wish I could afford to get a nice set of ported heads right now but I just don't have that kind of money being that I just got back from a week vacation. I hate that this happened but there's nothing to do but get it fixed. Either that or push my truck out of the garage and set it on fire, which has crossed my mind a few times.

The good thing about this is that we were using a 7/64th drill bit, so maybe they can drill around it.

Couldn't get the bolts out. Does anyone know of a good machine shop in Tallahassee? I already know they have one at Car Quest. But are there any others?

I'm taking the head to Car Quest tomorrow. My cousin Evan (Octane453 on here) knows the machinist. Hopefully he'll be able to get it out. I'm just ready to have my truck back on the road!
